Which brand HDD

Seagate, but not Maxtor. (Even though Seagate bought Maxtor. Whew, I hope there is no backwash in that cup.)

Lets see. I've got a Sata Maxtor 300 gig with a 16 mb cache and it works fine. I've been using a Western Digital External 250 gig with a 8 mb cache and that hasn't given me any trouble. I just bought a Seagate 750 gig external with 16mb cache. I haven't formatted the Seagate yet but my uncle's been using them a while and says he hasn't had any trouble.

Never tried Samsung or Hiache.

I only have heard BAD things about maxtor drives.

I own 4TBs of storage. half of it is compiled of Seagates the other half Western Digital.
I recommend those brands to most of my clients and firends.

I have had my share of hard drive deaths. Mostly becasue of 3 years of use! :)
Something to keep in mind, never trust a drive. Just asume it will die and you will lose that data. ALWAYS have a backup plan.

There is my 4 cents.

we have backups of the backups at my office. i couldnt imagine the terabytes of designs and software compiled over the last 7 years. !!!

I've been through dozens of hard drives in the span of my time using computers, and while I've seen certain brands perform better at certain times than others over the years, the only one which has been remarkably consistent and never failed on me a single time is Seagate. I've had Hitachi drives fail, WD drives fail, Maxtor drives fail - never once a Seagate. In addition to their unsurpassed reliability, they also have an industry-leading five year warranty, so if anything goes wrong within a five year span of owning the drive, they have you covered. That would be my absolute solid recommendation to you.

I've always belived in Seagate, although my Seagate 250GB just crashed upon me yesterday. :(

But calm down, I'm still not 100% sure if it was a physical problem with the disk, and not a virus or something...

FWIW, my best experiences have been with Hitachi and Seagate, and that's all I recommend to clients and on web forums.

Well, I think the truth is, that every hard drive from every manufacturer can crash. Sooner or later. This is why you should not rely on harddrives as backup solution

G-Drive is not a "drive." G-tech purchases drives from one of the manufacturers and puts them in their enclosure.
