* it's not a matter of "homes not having 4K screens", it's a matter of "eyes not able to see that much": I've tested it myself, and concluded that in order to see the difference between 3K and 4K I need to get unconfortably close to the screen; from 2K to 3K, it depends on the quality of the screen, but best case it's not an easy call; so I'm happy with 1080p

* a 4K bayer chip can resolve a bit more than 3K

* if you're going to debayer the 4K RAW footage from the scarlet into 1080p intermediate files that your computer can work with, you get (in theory) exactly the same amount of detail that you get from the C300, which is a 4K bayer sensor debayered to 1080p; what you lose with this second approach is options: the camera does the debayering with pre-established settings, and encodes the result into 8bit 422 files

I don't get the "Bad"? I see your negatives as all positives.

4K. Not trying to start a flame war, but I just am not convinced 4K is worth it, especially while solid-state storage, global shutter, and latitude are precious.
REDRAW. It's cool and all. But combined with 4K it eats up media fast, for the same grading flexibility that I can get with something like S-Log recorded to 10-bit 4:2:2 long-GOP.
Modular. It's a minority opinion, but I think dividing the image sensor, XLRs, card writers, etc., all into their own little boxes, makes the whole camera, when put together, bigger. My ideal camera size is something like the Canon XA-10. The whole point of modularity is to avoid the whole camera becoming obsolete when just one part, like the sensor does. But the technology already exists to build the camera to satisfy me for the next 10 years, or life. It just hasn't been put together properly.

I was most satisfied with the announcement that's been made on REDuser and here...

Finally, thanks to RED and Scarlet-X there's nothing holding anyone back from competing with the big boys!

Who knew this day would come so soon?

sorry, we're still not there: we still need to find cheap ways to blow up stuff safely, make your neighbor look like a viking, trick the camera into believing your sister is the most beautiful lady ever, etc, etc

but yeah, apart from that, we're quite close already

Both Canon and Scarlet shot themselves in the foot . When the world's economies are at virtual standstill or worse, collapse, and they come out with expensive cameras , esp. Canon ? I'm just puzzled.

Might as well spend your money while it's still worth something then eh? The apocalypse needs to be captured in 4k!

Canon totally underwhelmed, and Red overdelivered. Canon gave us an F3 with no capability to autofocus or autoiris and with no path to dual-link or 4:4:4, for $4000 more than the F3. Red gave us a Red One MX for 1/3 the price, in an Epic body.
Never thought I would hear this coming from your mouth, but this is nail on the head.

I am wondering, in a true cinema-style production, how often autofocus or autoiris are used? It seems to me that doing everything manual is how most people would go with this piece of gear even if those functions were included.

To me, they're just things I have to remember to turn off.

Auto-iris is something I'd use. I've done enough indoor to outdoor (or the reverse) transitions to REALLY wish I had a remote iris pull. If the camera can pull that off smoothly without needed an iris puller, I am all for it. Autofocus would be GREAT for me for talking head work if I want to shoot shallow. I no longer have to pull shots when someone scoots up or leans back in a chair if I am at F2.8 or shallower. Neither is something I would use often, but both are things I could use on occasion. Or things I would try more often if they worked well.

For me, for the relative near-term, both the C300 & Scarlet will be rental items. I'm very glad they'll probably be available to rent in my town sometime soon.

But I've sworn-off buying "expensive" camera gear myself, unless my fortunes were to radically change, and even then ... well, that's unknowable.

More interesting to me will be Canon's next version of the 5DM2 (more so than the announced "EOS Cinema" 4K HD-DSLR), Panasonic's next versions of the AF100 & GH2, and Sony's next video & HD-DSLR cams ... someday.

But far more interesting to me is working _today_ with my hacked GH2, and with my clients' FS100, XDCAM, and AVCCAM cams.

While I'm sure I'll enjoy shooting video in the future on "future" gear, in the meantime even some of today's low-cost gear is fully capable of supporting compelling story-telling. YMMV.

Hopefully someone got my flagrant sarcasm.

You had me worried there for a second! I was excited by the announcement yesterday but if there's anything that will stop me buying a RED in the future it's the almost religious fever that surrounds the company sometimes.

Spend some time around film guys for a while and get into a Kodak v Fuji discussion.

where's the option for Avid's MC6? My feeling is that they are the clear winner with the best product for my line of work...
