which 50mm ?

Hi there,

I got my 5dmkii the other day with a 24-70 F2.8 as a gen purpose lens, shoot35 follow focus and rails on order and I want a decent fast 50mm for good bokeh and narrow dof.

I was originally just going to plump for a canon 50mm F1.2 but I see that Zeiss make the ZE 50mm 1.4 planar which is probably better built with a longer throw more suitable to a follow focus. The zeiss is only half a stop slower but HALF the price which means I could almost get 2 lenses for the price of the Canon 50mm 1.2

The only thing that puts me off is looking on vimeo etc.. the Canon 50 1.2 seems to have an incredibly smooth buttery bokeh whilst the Zeiss has quite a nice bokeh but it can be a little sharp in places with concentric rings at F1.4

Does anyone use the Zeiss on their 5d and have any decent footage to show ? Any comments anyone ?

cheers

Rich

Well the Canon 1.2 is lovely but impossible to shoot at 1.2, depth of field of 2mm wide open. I've used the Zeiss they are lovely no auto focus though and I also do a lot of stills so I just hire. Here in London I can hire a box of Zeiss primes for £80 per day you get 4 lenses.

The sharpness of the 1.4 zeiss is not highly regarded. The 1.2L is going to be better, but as derek said you aren't ever going to shoot VIDEO at 1.2. Further more, shooting video on your DSLR is hardly to use any resolution of any full-frame glass.

I'd recommend the sigma 50mm 1.4 over the zeiss.

I agree on the Rokkor, but one must always provide the caveat that adapting the lens to EOS can be somewhat challenging (or an additional expense for the simple solution from someone like Jim Bucchanan) and there are potential mirror clearance issues for the 5D2.

I would say that you can't ever shoot video at 1.2, but you can't really shoot people being that wide open. You can get some really nice looking b-roll shots being open at 1.2 (ECU shots anyway). I really like the 1.2L lens. Nice glass and nice light. :)

I recommend:

1. Nikon Nikkor MF AI (or AIs) 50mm f1.4 (EBay ca. 150 Dollar)
Nikon Nikkor MF AI 55mm f1.2 (Ebay ca. 400 Dollar - very good Quali)

2. Sigma 50mm f1.4
