Which 24P mode?

One question, and one question only.

Are you going to EDIT in 24p?

If yes, then 24pA. If no, then 24p standard.

It's that simple.

Yeah, there's a lot of misinformation out there, and most people new to it think it must be this complex, arcane formula and that going to a film out must have something to do with it. Not so. It's a simple matter.

I have heard (and read) that if you want the final project to look like film to use 24P and if you want it to look like broadcast TV or Reality TV use 24PA

David,

Does the quality differ if you shoot in regular 24p and edit in 29.97? I feel like by shooting 24p not advanced i'm more open to be able to use more footage, and there's less room for screwing up. Is that true or have I imagined this?

thanks.

Well, that is not the case. The main difference between 24p and 24pA is the pulldown method that the camera applies...the only difference between the two is how the material is handled. You get the same look on both settings (for the most part) What will give a broadcast or "Reality TV" look however, is 60i.

I'm not sure what you mean on either count -- able to use more footage, or less room for screwing up. Can you explain that further?

It's always best to edit in the native framerate of your footage. If you CAN edit 24p, you should.

what i meant by the more footage (which I realized after I already posted) was different formats of footage, like using 60i with 24p or 30p with 24p, then wouldn't it make sense to edit in a regular timeline.

But you suggest if I know that i'm using only 24p footage, even if its not Advanced, to edit in a 24p timeline?

Also, in order to do that, do you have to change the timeline from 29.97 to 24p before capturing footage (in FCP)?

sorry for the confusion, I guess if this all made sense to me I wouldn't have to ask all these questions :)
