Where's the best price for the HVX200?

I've had my eye on this camera since it's was announced. I bought the DVX100 the first month it was out back in 2002. That camera is awesome and my favorite of the small form professional cameras. Friends of mine have been using the DVX100a as well, so i know its look.

If the HVX200 is the HD version of those with logical improvements into the HD realm, it's a great choice.

The HVX200 color and highlight control is very good as well having true progressive capture with DVCproHD, P2 etc. There is a good size list of pro's I have written that make the HVX200 the camera for me.

I plan to purchase a HD camera soon, it's heavily leaning towards the HVX200.

Another important question....

God for bid the HVX200 need to have a pixel mapped or a repair. Where is the Panasonic broadcast repair center near Orange County CA. If I'm in production, does Panasonic offer professionals a loner program while your gear is out of commission?

Is there a speed track for repairs?

I ask this because; as important is the cameras performance so is the support structure from the camera company during production if you have a camera that goes down...

I'm leaning the same way but I have one stupid question. Where is Panasonic
made--Japan? The reason I ask is I live in Canada and if something is made
in North America there is no duty on it. And if you cross in Quebec there's no provincial sales tax.

Thanks. I hope it isn't too off topic.

Hey Pappas - good to hear you are jumping on the bandwagon, it might be a while before you get one tho if you are now trying to preorder. If you are concerned about reliability of the camera - the best option is to rent for those mission critical projects - you know the rental house will cover any problems asap.

I never had a problem with my 100a - pixel issues or anything - how about you? My first canon 20d had a hot pixel that wasnt really noticeable but I returned it to the place I bought it (buydig.com) and they shipped me another - no probs with the new 20d with 11 mo of use. So, I wouldnt really worry about issues like pixels.

If you really want to, you can get a mack warranty and cover issues like that for 4 years. If you have to send it in for warranty work, you can rent for the time that it is being serviced.

Just buy the darned camera already :)

The AVS deal is pretty good.

Panasonic is made in Japan.
If you buy the camera in Canada, the warranty is only valid in Canada. If you buy from the U.S., the warranty is only valid there.
So, for example, if you live in the States but buy your camera from a Canadian dealer you would have to send it to Panasonic Canada for warranty repair. Panasonic U.S. would fix it, but you would have to pay.
I'm not aware of any loaner program - not up here anyway. This camera isn't considered "professional" like a Vari-Cam etc. It's in the DV family along with DVX, DVC30 etc. and considered more "prosumer" if you get my drift!
Hope this is helpful.

I too have made up my mind to purchase an HVX, but is there any indication as to when I could actually get one? How long is the pre-order list? I couldn't commit to buying the camera before seeing actual test footage, handling the camera myself, hearing opinions, etc. But now that I'm ready to go, I feel like I'll have to wait an eternity.

AVSupply.com 5600 camera+one p2 card

cant find it in their website...

any more details on this? looks like a sweet deal... I wonder if Spec Comm will match this....

She posted it on the forum here and I called to get it. Better make it quick.. she ordered 25 and yesterday I got on at 18. Requires a 500 dollar deposit that is refundable.. but it's the cheapest deal around for the camera and one P2. I think she's selling it at her cost. It's almost a grand more than the other dealer locally.

Barbara at AVS.. it's listed with contact info on that thread about local dealer.. no wait. It's on the main news first page. She said beginning of March.. which is what a lot of people have been told

Justyn,
Very interesting I must say...I called Barb on Tuesday and pre-ordered with her and she said that "I" was # 18 on her list. I wonder if she got confused with all of the calls.

Justyn,

Whoah, I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread. I went to the same local dealer as you. They were very nice, but the price from AVS is much better. I think you can purchase an extra 4gb p2 card and it would still be a better deal at AVS!

I am #6 on her list and she told me I should get the camera no later than the end of February. If Rush gets mine in faster than her, I can cancel my refund. Sorry Rush, have to make money..

I know.. Not sure if the numbers are all good because before I made the payment... She told me I would be 20. Maybe some people backed out.

As of now though.. I'm stoked. My balance with her would be 5100 plus shipping which might be 60 bucks or so. I'm also looking to buy just the essentials in the beginning. Like a clear filter to protect the lens... few batteries.. and a pelican case. I'm hoping to keep everything under 6000 and then build up from there.

What is everyone else buying?

G-Man,

I had the same reaction with the local guys. Very nice but he was totally unwilling to negotiate on the price. For the HVX he wanted 5900 and then 650 per card. Since I'd have to pay sales tax, the price difference is: $1400 bucks. That's crazy. I told him that aside from the tax.. it's still crazy and still 800 bucks more.

I'm just hoping I can buy more P2 cards or the firestore when it comes out. I think I want the firestore the more I get excited about being out shooting all friggin day. I have a feeling a lot of slow-mo shots of my kids beating the crap out of each other.

I too am so glad I came across this thread. HIP HIP HORAY for Barb....

I ordered my HVX today from AVS. Best price I could find, especially since it includes one P2 card. I don't have to ship it because they are close enough that I can drive down to get it and tax is only 2.5% with the "production use" tax waiver.

FullRez,
What city are you in? I'm going to pick my camera up as well, i don't want to wait any longer for them to ship it to me. With my luck Fedex will go on strike at that time and my camera will be delayed even longer. I don't really want to take that risk! If you live in the LA area maybe we can carpool. Two HVX's in the car on the way home will be spiritual.

I'm in South Orange County. You know that small pool of indie film guys that live behind the orange curtain ;)
