Where's my timecode?

I'm a fairly new DVX100a user. Still learning.

After filling up one tape, I was getting these awful horizontal bars on playback. Turned out it was nothing but dirty heads, which was easily resolved with a head-cleaning cassette.

The guy at the store who sold me the head cleaning cassette told me that it's a good idea to fast forward through new tapes once before recording on them. He said brand new tape can sometime "flake off" a bit on the heads, and that fast forwarding (and rewinding, of course) before using them can help to keep that flakiness from mucking up the heads. So I fast forwarded and rewound several tapes before shooting on them recently.

Just one problem. Now I'm not getting timecode on the tapes.

On the LED screen just to the left of where the time code should appear, I see "UB*," which, according to my user's manual, means "the user's bit value could not be read out properly from the tape." And the time code digits just read as 00:00:00:00 and never move, even while recording.

Why?

Does my tape actually have timecode on it, but I've just inadvertently bumped a setting somewhere? If so, where do I go to explore this mystery?

Re: Where's my timecode?

I am such an idiot.

Idiot, idiot, idiot.

As I suspected might be the case, it was my own doing, inadvertently toggling between several of the settings available when pressing the "counter" button.

NEVER MIND. :-)
