So where are some good places to pick up good music to use in film editing. Preferably stuff thats downloadable orchestral and not midi from a keyboard. It seem so hard to find good music.
If you want free music (which has some good stuff if you search) check out: www.incompetech.com
If you want some good quality at a low price I second the digital juice stack traxx
Lastly, smartsound is good too especially because of the time remapping feature. You just say "I want a 2min 3sec length of this track" (more or less) and blam! This is what you need if you don't have any musical background or rhythm.
Just did a write up for people looking for music...Digital Juice is excellent...also check this article... http://igfdb.com/news.php
lots of free stuff through those links and there is heaps more if you look around and do a search here or on the web...
Associated Production Music is some of the best library music around. It's used often in high end TV and radio advertising, as well as being credited at the end of many (big budget) Hollywood features and Network TV programs. I only mention the price issue to let you know that library music can be very good.
use the "search" on myspace and the ask for permission to use there music.
works wonders for me, but MAKE SURE they say you can use it for whatever your
using it for.
I don't do orchestral stuff very much but check out my website www.jasonboyce.com and if you like any of the songs you can use the whole version free of charge
Thought I'd just chime in and say something about MIDI.
Firstly, when you use the term MIDI, don't confuse it - MIDI does not automatically mean you're getting sounds like that on a cellphone. Fact is, MIDI is just DATA. It's just an interface. Hollywood trailers, indie films, hollywood films, pop songs, rock songs, hip hop, radio, ads, TV shows, you get the point - they ALL use MIDI.
Some of the current greatest composers for film use MIDI and Orchestra WITH MIDI. With some of the sample libraries available today, it's a great alternative. Put it this way - most people here arn't shooting 35mm with massive rigs right? That's like us composers using solely sample libraries, because hey - who has the London Symphony Orchestra at their disposable every day? If I scored a film which had the budget for a really good orchestra, then I'd go for it...obviously.
Most of the film composers you'll find online who score independent films etc. are all using pretty good sample libraries, and the sounds don't sound like cellphones - That would be GENERAL MIDI files (.mid) , which yeah, is a cellphone ring tone basically.
Yep, it basically is the score in data form. If you have a melody as a midi file, you can play this melody with any kind of sound/tone you want. You have the melody and can play it as a trompete or a piano or anything else.
For example, there are keyboard instruments that can output as midi directly into your computer. So you can play any melody at the keyboard and change it then into anything you want.
