F5: Where in the world is all the f5 footage??

I think its still pretty early to see vast quantities, and also don't forget that some stuff being shot can not necessarily be put online depending on the circumstances, etc..

Lastly with the prices of the F5/F55 its not exactly like everyone jumped on the bandwagon from what they might have already been using or I know many are waiting for blackmagic to come out before making any major leaps.

Anyway don't let the lack of footage detract you from considering one. Its a great camera, great dynamic range, and XAVC 10-bit 422 is really proving itself when you get that footage in post and want to twist it around. With the R5 it really steps up the game and film like look from the camera.

Your best bet is heading to your local dealer and test driving one. They'd be happy to entertain you with one I'm quite sure.

Dennis makes a good point, it's a fact the camera has been selling very well and if we're not seeing a lot of it online it's prob because these cameras are being used on professional jobs that are either in production or in post. I can speak for myself and say since I received my F5 in March and aside from initial testing, the 35 days I filmed with it on jobs every frame is owned by a client and is in post. I've got some great shots of my dog though.. ;-)

I actually view it as a good sign. It means the F5 and F55 is flying off the shelf for professionals instead of hobbiests. We'll see their work on TV and the big screen in a flood after post production and release. After all its only been 3 months since ANY of these cameras were released.

Adam was there anything specific you were hoping to see the camera do? Ie. Dynamic range, highlight handling, etc.. ?

Thank you everyone for the responses, you made good points.

I guess I just wanted to see some really cinematically lit footage to tell me "Yeah, this cam can look amazing in the right hands", because I don't have that great of an imagination to see the beauty that lies within a gray overcast shot, or in a gray S-LOG2 shot that wasn't graded. I also would like to see how well it handles greenscreen with the 10 bit 4:2:2 XAVC codec and how that will compare to the soon-to-be-released HDCAM-SR 4:4:4 codec. I've spent six years working with muddy 4:2:0, 25 Mbps, 8 bit (interlaced! 1/30th shutter! stupid me!) footage, and I'm tired of cleaning up "webbing" between fingers and hair! LOL

I'm hoping this camera is significantly sharper than the FS700, which I've heard isn't as sharp as it should be, and that it will give me eons cleaner keys than what I could get out of an FS700 + 4:2:2 external recorder.

Thanks again for the responses, and if any of you can comment on the quality of the F5's greenscreen keys vs the aforementioned combo (or other 8 bit cams), it would be much appreciated!!

I know you're asking more about the F5 but I did some cinematic style lighting/shooting on a project recently using the F55 in XAVC 10-bit 422 slog2 mode. I think it turned out alright considering I did not shoot RAW where you have a lot more to wrangle highlights and lose the "video look".

Below are some frames from a first pass through grading in Davinci. Let me know what you think of them

**edit I will re-export and publish these frames using actual MXF source files. Previously they were screen captures from quicktime player.

I'm interested in seeing them too. I think that the ability to shoot 4:2:2 and raw put the F5 (F55) in a unique place. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised there isn't more out there but thanks, starcentral. I saw those grabs of the night exteriors with the different LUTs from the other thread. They look beautiful.

To the OP, if you haven't seen it, I like this little short as a pretty good look at the F5 https://vimeo.com/57240593#

Thanks, Dennis, I look forward to seeing those... I don't rule out the F55, I love the global shutter, but the price is a bit steep!

Also, thank you hscully; yes, I did see that clip... however, I haven't seen any of the other promo F5 videos that were shot, such as "Images". I'm looking for some now.

Thanks Ned!
I shot it at 1080 24 XAVC S-LOG. I used a Zeiss CP.2 50mm/T2.1 for all the shots except for the last shot which I used the FS700 with a canon 70-200. The S-LOG on that camera is really good. I attached a picture of another shoot I recently did showing the difference. SLOG VS CC.jpg
