Where does the HVX200 fit into Filmmaking?

People who respond with cursing are uneducated so that I wont respond to .But ,I have met Jan and she is fantastic and very funny at that but no..... panasonic is not your friends ,they are in the business to make money

Jarred ,Since panny is your friend I wonder if you would give a fair answer to people who may need your help on what to buy or will it be blind product loyality?Wonder how fair that 3 way camera test was also(fx-1,xl2,dvx test)
I'm also ready for the hate replies from this post

Collie.. You just came in with guns blazing so dont be surprised when people shoot back.

As for bias.. I prefer the DVX over the XL2 in some ways, thats a personal bias yes. Ive never liked Sony cameras all that much but even the F-1 has some brilliant features. If someone asks me which video camera to buy they probally already now what my answer would be, if I didnt like the DVX the best I probally wouldnt of started this forum. Hey check XL2user.com out. There is biased! As for Advertising biased opinions.. Panasonic does not pay for advertising here but Sony does.. so I just broke that bias a few sentances ago.

I dont really care if you ***** about the HVX.. just make sure you are accurate in your blows, if you are using wrong information, it just pisses people off.

"People who respond with cursing are uneducated" you would be surprised how much smart educated people swear when they are with thier friends.. and to some people DVXuser is a friendly place. So dont be offended if I say **** or someone says ****.

Oh and the 1,000,000 fact is wrong, there are not a million dvx's in the world. I think he just typed an extra 0 in there by mistake.

Sony=Vegas. Jarred loves Sony. :thumbsup:
And, if you spent some time here you may discover so does Barry_S, Barry_Green, John_Hudson, all guys who are moderators of this forum. Use the best tools, I say.

Man this forum just brings about a stream of crap it seems..

I'd do follow the logic behind "having to spend a lot of money" to work with the HVX... that is such a load of crap.

If I was going to buy the HVX200 I could shoot a short film entirely with just the camera and 1 P2 card, in HD.

no special anything required.. and I think that is what lots of people will do.

you can edit DVCPRO-HD right now... with no problems.... hence the reason Apple and Panasonic came up with DVCPRO-HD over Firewire...

Camera is just a tool... it seems far too many people on this site forget that.. and focus entirely on that...

rant over.

ASIDE: What is with the Rampant use of hdx200????? What did panasonic annouce a new product I am unaware of?? I sure thought it was the HVX200... just wondering.. the first page is full of typo's

EDIT: Upon further review, Collie, is borderline retarded. Jarred and Barry.. you guys are fighting the good fight.. round of beers on me when you win.

well said Loki.

And yes Vegas pretty much kicks ass. We just gotta get them to deal with the DVCpro HD codec or we are all in big big trouble.

What's this "We" stuff Kemosaba?

"I got two words for you Final Cut Pro" "Ok, more than two words"

I'm sure they will. It's not like Vegas is owned by a competing mega-corporation who's notorious for not listening to their customers... oh wait. =)

Well, at least the PSP kicks ass.

Yeah, I knew you were kinda joking around... besides, a lot of my friends are commies... I just tend to back my mates from Tibet and Taiwan on certain issues...

Besides, I like you thisiswells, you put a lot of useful posts on this forum

Feel the love

its still doable... dont get me wrong, its just if you do 5 streams in your timeline its not gonna be as smooth as DV. 720p DVCAM HD isnt that bad, as the ads all show, you can do it on a laptop.

Jarred, it depends if you do it on a Powerbook or a Wintel laptop. Much difference.
My PB does DVCProHD in realtime and with the new Final Cut Pro 5 it runs even better. Oh well, these discussions will get even hotter once Apple will have its first Powerbook out with an Intel processor instead of the PowerPC as of now. MacTel should be out in about a year from now. Interesting times.

In case anyone is taking the "communist" comment seriously (and the implication that thought and expression are being "censored" here, or that this forum is a group-think exercise), it might be a good time for a perspective check.

"Censorship" means exactly one thing: when a GOVERNMENT, as public policy, decides to suspend the right of free speech, either completely or on an incident-by-incident basis. If free people who are running an entirely autonomous and voluntary subscription online forum decide to curtail the comments of any poster, that in NO WAY is censorship.

It should also be stated that a forum titled "DVXUser.com" might not be a perfectly objective source of analysis/opinion regarding this prosumer line of camera equipment. This is a fanboy site. We like the camera and share information about how to use it most effectively. We have a direct line of communication with its manufacturer (via Jan) to give our input for its future development.

Desenting voices are appreciated (at least by me) when the info is compelling, insightful, and, most importantly, accurate. Cussfests and flamewars, however, are NOT appreciated. There are plenty of generic, non-DVX centric DV forums with rabid fans from several recording platforms meet. Maybe those are more appropriate places to spar over which camera is best and why. It is self-evident that almost everyone here is in the DVX camp. And although the HVX won't write DVCPRO100 to $.99 audio cassettes and have optics that crush the CineAlta, as it has been proposed the HVX is sure to be a hit with most of this community (and I speak as an EVENT videographer for whom P2s will be completely impractial, in both cost and recording time, for at least two or three years after its scheduled release).

I really like this site and hate to see it unfairly criticized.

Sure you can rent an SDX vs. the HVX if your shooting a pilot or video feature. But if you're shooting a short film- I'd shoot film.
And if you're shooting a documentary- I'd shoot with the HVX. Shooting a doc can take months to shoot and you need to pack up and be on the move at a moments notice. Renting wouldn't make sense.

Each camera has it's place.
In the end- as always- it's not what camera shoot with- it's the project/idea/script that needs the most attention.

I think Collies got it kinda backwards.

With an indie film, there are other considerations that come first. You have to take into account your market paradigm you're aiming for, the concept, marketability of your film, distribution options and potentials, and the various experience and reputation of the principles and crew.

Once you know (as best as can be ascertained) what the potential for your film is, and the revenue- cost has been worked out (including realistic expectation and pay-off) then you're there. These rent vs. own arguments usually are specious. Once you get into specifics and plug in the variables, the decision is pretty much made for you.

Most independent distributors are looking for a 35mm shoot anyway, depending on genre and cast. That percentage is changing, but if you enter their office with HVX footage (if it is as good as anticipated) and SPX footage, both of you are at a disadvantage. Doesn't make sense, but that's the bias towards film still existing.

I think it comes down (realistically) to how do you intend to recoup your costs ?, what is your expectation for the film ?, and how do you envision your future production paradigms going?

Answer those three questions and I doubt you'll be having a rent vs, own discussion.

A fellow colleague told me once " most of the people (pro-sumers) who own their own gear do so, cause they're trying to hedge their bets in case their films suck". I told him, well I guess then, following that logic, even Picasso must have bought the biggest canvas and the finest paints and brushes, spending all he had on his first or second painting. Otherwise, he thought his painting may suck.

Fact is when you need the SPX or 35mm, you'll know it. :)

Hey guys,
even with the conflict this discussion helped me become more knowledgeable on what the hvx can do. if collie didn't show up with his argument that wouldn't have happened for me. i use the DVX100. i will also get a new panny soon. now i feel i can make a good choice between the 100a or the HVX. Thanks everyone. Lesson learned: this site, even with conflict, meets my needs for developing as a digital "film" maker. Now... about my Konvas 2m 35mm and my Krasnogrsk 16mm - oh, never mind.
cheers,
earon

I think that the HVX will be a great hit with independent filmmakers. There is a market segment of filmmakers, because of what ever reason, have been making movies on DV and for whom the rental of an SPX, Varicam or film camera is not possible. A lot of these individuals will move up to the HVX. Some will chose to move up to HDV and some will, for what ever reason, will stay with DV.

Panasonic is giving the filmmakers more choices. It is beyond me to think that deserves anything but praise, even if you do not chose to use the camera.

It seems crazy to me that everyone is getting so worked up over a camera nobody has seen a single frame of footage from.
However, having said that, I personally think that, based on the provided specs that this will probably be one kick ass camera that can shoot in as many formats as anyone could possible want and will be more camera than most inhabitants of this forum will ever need.

I think it is good that Collie has the balls to stand up for himself! I don't agree with everything he says but we should look at every side here.

I think we all get blinded by our excitment for the HVX! It could be completely useless. Now I am beginning to calm down, the HD100 is becoming the more sensible option.

I want the Panasonic to answer all my prays... but it won't. Will it answer more than the HD100 (or even the Z1) - that is the real question.

The HVX sounds great, but your right mmm we don't know what it will do. It may be next year before it hits the market. Panasonic needs to put out alittle more info or when the HD100 or maybe even a Canon is released people will forget about the HVX200. I'm going to take a close look at the JVCProHD when it come out.

If I owned a big company I would get the hype going, get the people all worked up, then release the thing!! It's like all they had was a idea,,,JAN any news?

Hey Bart, I agree with you entirely.

I don't think anyone criticised the site per se, but rather abusers of it. As far as cussfests, flamewars and inaccuracies go, I think it cuts both ways. That is, it's not only Panny detractors who indulge from time to time.

I like coming here too. Viva DVXuser.

Might I make one suggestion; could a moderator or the original poster please change the misleading title of this thread from HDV200 to HVX200, as newcomers would likely assume there is either a new HDV Panasonic model coming out or even worse, people might mistakenly draw a relation between the HVX and HDV.

I just hope they decide to add the ..."looks like film" button on the HVX.

Collie has every right to question us, as we are Panny People. I just disagree with questioning Jarred on his opinions......Collie he is president of DVXUSER, I think he kinda likes this camera best. Plus you have a Canon, Sony and JVC area on this board to check out. That seems fair enough to me.

The schedule has been announced, and it's not going to change. Don't look for the camera coming out before December, is my bet. Should see some footage sometime around August/September maybe.
