Where do you find people to work on a short?

I've been wanting to work on a short or something longer but can't seem to find anything to work on. I know many people on here are writer/directors but I can't seem to find anyone local. I've talked to a few people but things never work out. When I was in college I could always find something but over the years I been having trouble. So where does everyone on here find the people they work with.

Standard networking. Find a few people, find out who they know, get to know them, find out who they know, get to know them, etc.

User groups (NLEs, cameras, etc.), writers groups, acting groups -- nose around UC to start. Also look online for local groups.

I guess I forgot one important fact I have aspergers so meeting new people and networking isn't easy. I even have a hard time posting in forums.

You can do craigslist. Just make sure your post is well thought and professional looking. If you want to attract more talented people be clear and concise. Tell the truth and spelling correctly will help. It goes a long way.

But this is only if you have a project you already want to make. As for joining someone else... check craigslist! LOL. Also there is Mandy.com

But just by making your own project and doing a casting call you'll find actors in your area, who will know other people etc and so on.

The few people I talked to were from craigslist. On one we setup a meeting I went there (and that's a big deal for me) They never showed and wouldn't reply to my emails. I can't do my own project because I'm not a producer or writer but I can light and shoot. I've offered to buy equipment for projects and even put up a budget but still can't get anyone. Also my spelling is really bad so that doesn't help. I also spell check important stuff and make it sound as good as I can.

dvxing - if you're doing a simple project, send me a pm, I'm a writer, I can toss three pages in an hour and a half - but bigger projects like film festivals stuff, that has to wait until I get all my stuff back loaded on my computer.

A short three page short I can whip out for you a zip.

Thanks for the offer I might take you up on it in the future.

Sorry, but I just can't resist...

DVXing, you say you're not a producer. Maybe it's time to become one. If you're prepared to buy equipment and put up money for a shoot, you're already producing.

I just shot an entire feature-length movie in my own home. I know a guy who shot a 30-minute short that was set entirely in his apartment, with only two characters -- his wife and himself. He had a crew of 2 -- his wife and himself. He wrote the script, shot the film, composed the music, and even did the box cover art. He shot on a VHS-C camcorder, using the built-in mic, and lit with just regular table lamps. He edited linearly by connecting his camcorder to a VCR, and bought a cheap $80 titler to make the titles. It wasn't the greatest thing I ever saw, but it got a favorable review from Joe Bob Briggs on his website, and actually got distribution.

If you buy a decent camera, a decent mic, and most any kind of lights -- from Lowe's work lights on up -- and get yourself a good script, you could make a film 100 times better than his.

I'm nowhere near your location. If you need help with a script, I'm your man. I can also walk you through producing from beginning to end. So shoot me a PM.

You can do it. You really can.

Networking is almost an art in itself. I've been doing that art for a while now down at the local pub. :)
