Where are my frame grabs?

Jan said that she would be getting ahold of a final working version on the 8th. She didn't promise frame grabs.

The most recent post I have seen from her mentioned that the first footage will probably be made available the weekend of the DV Expo, which is December 7th.

Are they showing the HVX at DV Expo?

Not to be a prick, but is this standard operating procedure, to show grabs/footage approx. 10 days before customers receive cameras ?

What happens to your deposit (if you needed to give one) if you don't like the footage, and drop out of the pre-order?

It's standard operating procedure not to show anything at all before a camera is released, and then usually the footage comes about from the first round of early adopters/testers that help influence the rest of the interested public. I think the announcement of the XL H1, with a release date much closer to that announcement made people go "hey - it didn't take Canon 11 months to get the camera out like Panasonic!" but let's be real. I'm sure that they were working on it just as long as Panasonic was and just didn't say anything about it. If they had mentioned it back in January or February, people would've been whining about footage just as much for that camera. So why did Panasonic tout their camera around over a year before it was released? Well, with no public knowledge of any upcoming alternatives to the HDV cams, JVC and Sony would probably have sold quite a few more units (and stolen sales from Panasonic). Panny said, "hey, we've got this amazing camera coming... just hang in there (and then some), and we'll get it to you!" And although it has annoyed people that they have to wait around for so long, I think their strategy will show success in sales. Canon was lucky in the sense that they didn't have to say anything because people were already waiting for Panasonic, so they had the luxury of being able to keep hush on their product and only announce it right before they intended to sell it.

I'm not absolutely sure why Panasonic needed so much time to make the camera, but I am sure that they did everything they could to get it made as soon as possible while ensuring that it's going to be good quality and do what people are expecting it to do. This camera could be a make-or-break camera for Panasonic (no, the camera isn't "expensive," but it will have a significant effect on the sales of P2) and they know that if they want to be successful, they had better get it right. Of course I wish I had it in my hands today, but I'm willing to wait a little longer if it means they still had bugs to fix and tweaks to make.

As for your deposit, most companies will not refund it if you pull out early (that's why they make you pay it). It depends completely on the vendor, however; you'd have to call. As I mentioned in another post, EVS took people's names for their list without requiring payment of any kind - a very bold move that shows how committed they are to their customers.

...i believe so...i hope so...
but how can you garantee that ? seriously ?

Well, he could throw it off the roof of a tall building into a desert lot. It'd probably break some ground when it hit. That's about the only way to guarantee something like that...

Barry, that joke is a new low in DVX comedy.

(okay, actually that pun was a new low :) )
Get it? Get it?
Because the camera's underground...so it's low...get it?

I need to see something soon!!!! Whats taking so much time?

jan only has a 14.4k modem so it takes a long while to upload large HD framegrabs and clips. Panasonic spent all of their budget on P2 cards for testing and couldn't afford a T1 line.

That is a great thing to do. But the one drawback in my view is that not everyone on that list can actually afford to buy it. So even though I have cash in hand and want to plop down my money "now" to assure I get one....I may be behind 100 other people who didn't put anything down to secure it and may not even be able to afford it. Bottom line is I have purchased 2-3 cameras and alway secured my place in the "que" by either paying up front or paying a deposit. I need to know I am getting it......not waiting to see if 30-40 other people "opt" out to see where I stand.

Just my .02 cents. I think it is great what Rush has done but wish also that pre-paying bought you some type of priority.

peace!

BTW....I am on that list at EVS so I am not at all dogging them! I just wish I knew 4-5 months ago that you didn't need to have the cash to preorder. I probably would have been in the first 10!
