When it Rains - An EX1 Short Film

Jim Montgomery

Well-known member
Jim Montgomery and David Pollard team up to produce When It Rains.

Shot with a Sony EX1, XDCam HD and the Letus Extreme. Davids script seem to extend a challenge that could not be passed up for a "DVRebel" style shooter. Total Budget $211.00, 4 days of filming 2 hrs per day, 2 days in post with some more refining to come.

Hope you all enjoy.

I got to be honest, I didn't get it. It's a failed break in, that much I gathered, but it doesn't seem to have any real structure or reason.

A femme-ninja / Mom breakes in to a house for a vase - I guess. Must have been a pretty important vase for all that effort, but then she drops it.

Where'd she get the car? Was it hers, or jut a lucky find? It wasn't clear.

Dialogue was awful. Sorry.

Also, there seemed - and maybe it was the lighting - to have some night and day continuity problems.

Was mom out all evening / night and the kids home alone?

All in all it appears you worked from a scrip not very well thought out.

Ahhh! I don't want to say you butchered it but...

I remember reading this script at the MoviePoet site. The premise of the script is that we don't know the lady is a burglar, we find out with the note at the VERY end. You're opening shot told us she was a burglar (by her clothing/actions), as did the next few. The Sixth Sense didn't open with title saying "bruce willis is dead" if you get me.

In your defence though the cell phone conversation in the car should have never been in the script and you could completely omit it from the short and it would only help it.

The shot of the note was a bit heavy on the DOF.

Not badly shot though, you did well. I would suggest adding a warm filter to the morning shot at the end of the script so it's not like the mom's getting home at 10am.

Like you said though there are more fixes to come and for 2 days it's cool. I'll check out the final version when you're done for sure.
