When does the pulldown happen in 24p?

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out something about my DVX that I can't seem to grasp. I'm shooting in 24PA, and curious as to what is actually happening.

The camera is actually recording in 60i, correct? Or, does it apply the pulldown before writing to tape? That is, does it simply not record the "C" frame? If you play back video on the LCD screen, is it playing 60i, or 24p? It seems it would be 24p, yet, I'm getting an interlaced image if I output from the camera to my HD TV via the RCA jacks.

When I connect the A/V cables directly to my HD TV, the video signal is obviously interlaced. If I hit pause, it's obvious I'm looking at an interlaced image. So, that makes me think it doesn't apply any pull down before recording to tape.

So, in adobe premiere pro, when I start a new project with the 24PA preset and capture video, what exactly does it do? Does it not capture the "C" frame, applying the pulldown as it captures the video? Or, does it capture the video as 60i, and simply display it on the timeline at 24p?

If that's the case, what happends if you try to import 24PA footage into a 60i timeline?

I then export my 24p project to a progressive DVD. However, my DVD player isn't progressive. How does the DVD player send the video to my TV? Does it still contain the original 60i footage? Or does in create it's own pull down to convert the 24p footage to 60i?

Basically, I'm just confused on when and where the footage is pulled down to 24p from 60i. Everything seems to be working fine, I'd just like to understand what is happening.

It acquires in 24P, then it buffers the frames and applies pulldown before writing to tape.

Everything on tape is 60i, as DV requires it to be 60i. In your editing program you can remove pulldown and get access to the original raw 24p content.

DVD players are different -- they can encode an actual 24P stream. So if you have a progressive component output on your DVD player, and a progressive component input on your monitor, you will see actual 24p footage.
