That's cool, Jim. I could start a whole spectrum of political posts on that topic, but I won't - I am learning to be a good boy :D.

You are right - you don't need (or should not need) a permission. Makes me think of my friend in university I mentioned earlier in this thread...

I'm thinking that we may have certain similar political views. But I'll be good too.

Re: when did you start?

1. 12 - On Super 8
2. No idea. Depends on how you define a film. I do this crap for a living.

Re: when did you start?

I entered my first film festival when I was 16.
I started getting serious about makin movies when I was 16.
Im about to turn 18 and I'm turning into a book on making movies (thanks to this site).

Ive made a tonnnn of little shorts for school, they really sucked. now i got a dvx and a ton of nice equiptment thanks to best buy for hiring and everything im putting out is quality.

plus I have a few job offers as an editor for local production companys and a job offer as a filmer for a short feature for sundance next month so yeah, proggressed a bit over the last year

Re: when did you start?

Well, my story goes like this. I have always been into the arts. I started at a young age with pencil drawing and acrylics after seeing my mother painting with watercolors. I spent years working with different mediums, ink, oils, etc... I gradually moved into 3D art with a desire to become an artist for a game dev company, but one day my girlfriend left her mothers miniDV cam at the house so I grabbed it up and made 2 shorts with it over a weekend. These were as raw as you could get, no tripod so i used boxes to assist with framing. No actors so I starred in it. The stories consisted of my morning routine, and me getting up from working on a 3D model to get a drink :/ Then I hopped online with a new interest, read about the XL1 saw the price and laughed. I continued with 3D and one day started looking into XL1 prices again when I stumbled upon the DVX. Needless to say I grabbed one up ASAP. I now have several shorts written and am waiting to find actors in my area. I really should point out that over the years my escape from reality was movies and video games, so I'm not totally new to film and have always had a love for it. I think Robert Rodriguez's book is a large part of the reason I even dwelled upon the idea of making films. I did not realize that the possibility existed until I read that. That book and the rate technology has advanced made me see that it is possible to make films without school, or a real budget. Sure I have a lot to learn, but I'm enjoying every minute of it. Sorry for the rant :)

Re: when did you start?

Oh, man...you really don't want to know why I started getting into this...

OK.  Heavily involved in local theater from '71 to '80 or so.  Then nothing until...

OK.  I get a housing allowance, pays for my apartment & utilities.  After a few years, I got sick of paying out-of-pocket because the exchange-rate tanked on me.  So I put in the paperwork to get it adjusted, thinking they'd up my monthly supplement.

Well, they did.  And they gave me 5 years worth of back-pay.

So, there I was with an $11,000 paycheck one week and I thought to myself "Gosh.  Making movies might be fun."

Tried to order an XL1s through Amazon.  Tried 4 or 5 times before giving up.

Bought a DVX, instead.

No films, yet.  There'll be one for the Dec contest, unless things fall apart.

Hi!   ;D

I picked up my first camera 3 years ago :D

I've made over 20 nature films, 1 dramatic short and 2 short comedies.

Are these viewable anywhere?

Re: when did you start?

The very first film I made was with my then 5-year old son with a camera I had borrowed from a friend (little handheld Panasonic thingy), just when my family and I moved onto Pine Lake. It's a typical Charlie Chaplinesque story about a kid trying to catch a fish. It's riddled with inconsistencies in continuity but fun to watch. I used Cinelook for all the old movie effects. It got runner up for the Adobe Digital Film Festival (I actually flew to LA for the ceremony) and the Seattle Times "Three Minute Masterpiece". I think I have it somewhere. If I can find it, I'll upload it.

Re: when did you start?

Again, shot with my kids. My son was deathly afraid of sleep after hearing a local Native American tale at school.

I based the film around his attempts to rid this imaginary demon and feel like he "saved" his family. The whole thing is based around his fear, how his immature little brain was dealing with that fear, and how he ultimately faced it and felt this private victory when he believed the demon was gone....due to his efforts. The "demon" in the film is never seen but implied with shaky-slow-shutter camera POV.

It was a 3-month shoot and I learned a tremendous amount of patience. The neighbors probably thought we were running a porno website with all the studio lights in the house at night.

Anyway, I was pretty pleased with it at the time but, at this point, it's not really feasible to put on line. I believe it was around 15 minutes long. More of a learning experience than anything else. It still scares the **** out of my son's friends when they watch it :)

The funny thing about it was the hero (my son) was growing pretty fast and looked quite different at the end from the beginning of the shoot plus, Mom was giving me grief about him needing a haircut which caused a post production nightmare in itself :)

Re: when did you start?

I saw your fishing story short - that's great for a first film. It's also great to see how far you've gone in just three years. Your stuff looks really good. Keep it coming!
