What's your thoughts on the new Nikon?

> I remember people really liking the D90

Really? I could never watch more than 15 seconds without Dramamine....

I would be nice if Nikon got serious and addressed the Jello problem. Otherwise it's a great stills camera.

I was just shooting D90 last night along with my HFS 200...and even at 1280 x 720 mjpeg 24P warts and all, it still does some things very well.....so the D7000 is in a whole new realm. It still has aliasing/moire problems and a small workaround for aperture adjustment - but the basic image looks great IMO.
Also the jello on the D7000 is nowhere near as bad as the D3100 and D90....
The D90 has to be shot VERY carefully.

Also if you look at some footage here (The Nikon section) and on vimeo- you'll see that Nikon has jumped forward a lot with the D7000. It looks as good as the Canon stuff...but that's just my opinon.
It also doesen't have 1080 30P and 720 60P so that puts some people off.

Beautifully shot, but what little movements it had were right on the edge of tolerance for me - jello wise.

Just my personal opinion.

Mike Kobal did some very cool D90 stuff as well. I hope I'm remembering his name right!
I'd love to see what either of them could accomplish with the D7000 though - it has a much better video implementation....jello/resolution/manual control/codec

The D7000 isn't the new Nikon, the D5100 is. You can't go around confusing me like that, haha!

I'm disappointed with the D5100 for the same reason that I was disappointed with the D7000 and that is for the lack of a 25p recording mode. I hope that you can adjust the aperture in Live View / Movie mode with the D5100 like you can't with the D7000.

UPDATE I got my information about frame rates from the Canadian press release about the D5100 but Engadget has a post at the moment which says it is capable of 25p. Fantastic, it may be a real competitor to the Canon T2i / 550D and the T3i / 600D

well, I've got my 550D and I love it, but I'm waiting for a better camera in the near future, you can call it *GH2 meets canon look at fullframe corral* (nearly no moire/aliasing, canon/nikon look, preferably full frame, clean-ish ISO 2500 or higher, not more than $3K)

I didn't expect anything to fill that gap at this price point, but this nikon, at first sight, seems terribly underwhelming (no better than the t2i and 18 months late)

edit: dpreview says:
The D5100 D-SLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions for movies, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24 or 30fps, or a web-friendly 720p resolution at either 24 or 30 fps for up to 20 minutes per clip, in the AVC-HD H.264 codec

I guess 25 is also there

I am very happy with the D7000 and my current client is overjoyed with the footage that it produces. It is fitting my needs and budget perfectly. The D7000 is a winner of a camera from Nikon, I am sure the 5100 will be another fine product. At the end of the day its the content, not the tools that made it that impacts on the viewer, and that is all that really matters.

"The best camera in the world is the one you have with you."

Damn so near D5100 is missing 60/50fps in 720 , just wondering the 20mins is this on HD or the same as the canon?

The main reason I passed up the D7000 was the live-view implementation, unless its been fixed with a firmware update it was the total deal killer for me.

Agreed. I looked into the Nikon but the lack of true live preview in video mode made it a non-contender.

I hope they have fixed this problem, as it will at least show Nikon are dedicated to continually improving their video mode using the feedback people are giving them.

Unless they have fixed/added a bunch of whole new features it will just be a cheaper alternative to a D7000, but not an alternative to the Canon's for serious video work.
