What's your experience of manual WB on your AF100?

I dont recall having an opinion or comment about the silver ball but I do know that I would find the balance cube a very helpful aid to exposure and the basis for the exposure decision

Whoops, you're right; it was the light trap you liked.

Sorry to be such a n00b (and I did read your blog post) - but what does one do in post to white balance with the cube?

I assume you select an area on the cube with an eyedropper, and then use a white balance feature in your software to balance from that - is that right? But which part of the cube do you select, and why? (BTW - what software do you personally use?)

Shooter summed it pretty much up.

The chrome ball shows you where your light sources are coming from, mostly useful for 3D animation or VFX work - doesn´t do anything for WB though.

Here is my workflow.
I balance the camera ether daylight or tungsten, depending on my main light source.
In post I use the brighter side (main light) of the cube to eyedrop my WB. So I got all my material on the same WB level in a first step.
The black sides and the light trap are for further finetunig exposure as a second step, together with some look.
Works with Premiere CC, Colorista or probably any other color tool.

I've been trying to get an ExpoDisc Video (rectangular) Neutral for a long time, but it's backordered for months everywhere. Even ExpoImaging says they won't have any for direct sale until July.

I always dial it in manually and also use one of these on each new scene/lighting setup:

Matt, what's the advantage of this over a grey card? You're not WBing on it like a grey card but using it in post, and also using it for exposure?
What's the workflow?

I look at the gray part while dialing in the manual wb, to me it shows any of the color cast.

In post I'll then use the white gray and black color pickers on the target to get closer, if needed.

I like the idea of the cube.

I currently use a large lastolite ezybalance http://www.lastolite.com/ezybalance.php

As well as shooting a shot for colour ref. (Colorista in AE) I also use the shot for Noise reduction (Neat Video) when required. Because I am mainly using primes and shooting from dolly, jib, cinemover etc I find the large grey card gives me enough coverage for my sampling needs without moving the camera.

I’m currently shooting a Sci-Fi short combining live action and CG, and I am teaming my AF100 up with lots of different lenses – the usual Nikon, Sigma suspects – as well as a Lensbaby and fish eye. The colour/contrast differences, especially when shooting wide open is so great that I find I need to shoot a grey card every time. I think the cube is going to help nail the contrast as well - think I will try one out.
