GH4 What's wrong with GH4 HDMI out?

I guess I am not the only one going mad about not getting output from GH4 HDMI. From D750 to Assassin just plug and record. From GH4, all I get is no input message!!

okay.. I am giving up on getting HDMI out to work. I only have HDMI to HDMI cable connected with HDMI to micro HDMI adapter. Would it be still worth trying to get HDMI to micro HDMI cable to try? If so, can someone tell me why it would make any difference?

Try the Pearstone cables before you send it back. They worked where previous ones hadn't for me.

I'd try it, Nobby, but exactly what is the difference between Pearstone and other such cables? I can buy one locally, but I don't want to spend too much more on this problem if it turns out to be a camera issue after all.

Send your GH4 in for repairs and when it comes back make sure you get something to lock the HDMI cable into position so you don’t damage the Micro HDMI connector. I used parts from this company to “Jury Rig” a locking device for my GH4. http://www.coollcd.com/hdmi-locks_c946?zenid=51cdade22d458d4a8bbe69ace7d561c5

BTW, Most good Cage systems now can be purchased with locking connectors for your cables.

That's a very nice setup, Vardalos. Where did you get that follow-focus setup, or is that part of the Cage? The one I used to have was a bit fragile.

I don't know about sending the camera in. It's bound to cost a bit and I've spent more than I wanted to, trying to get this problem fixed. I don't really need an external monitor, anyway.

But if I decide to, I'll definitely get something to ensure the HDMI socket doesn't get damaged again.

Yes, it seems to be a common problem, Bumkicho. That's why I'm hesitating sending the camera back for a hardware fix. I think it's a matter of compatibility.

Well, I can tell you from my experience it didn't make any difference. Neither the adapter nor the correct cable fixed the problem.

I had a string of issues with my cameras HDMI and cheap HDMI monitor until i found the right cable combination (the pearstone ones). My new GH4R works with any cable cheap or otherwise however!!

You have a GH4R? Can you clarify for me if that is a whole new model of the camera, or the GH4 with the software upgrade? The Panasonic site doesn't entirely make it clear.

I know you can get V-Log by itself, but I've read so many negative reviews, I'm reluctant to buy it. In any case, from what I understand, it by itself doesn't change anything in the HDMI output, but rather just adds wider dynamic range.

Is your GH4R a separate camera from the GH4?

GH4R is a new camera model (for the EU only). Basically all it does that's different is give you unlimited recording (for us people in the EU this is very nice) and V-Log preinstalled. No other differences. But i have found the HDMI output much more 'compatible' than my GH4. No idea why, might be just because its new and I haven't broken it yet.........

i had the same problem.
tried different cables, different monitors, settings, etc etc
fact of the matter is that the micro hdmi port on you cam is defective.
I sent mine in for repair, and now it works fine!

Does your GH4 HDMI OUT work with a regular TV set ?

I own three different 7 inch monitors and all three work perfectly with my GH4. ( and I've tried it with two TV sets which also had no problems )

Touché. :)

Ah, well. I don't need extra recording time, and I'm not keen on V-Log. So, I'll just do without an external monitor for now.

Yes, that's the fact. Did they tell you what had they had to do to repair it, Mr.Coffee? Because I was told it will require a new circuit board, not just a new HDMI socket. That sounds like big money to me.

But that's why I wanted to know if micro HDMI sockets can short-circuit the board if their pins get damaged. Because two of its pins were bent to one side, one touching its neighbour. I pushed them back into place, and the micro plug was able to slip into the socket without a problem. But of course if the board has already been shorted out by the bent pins, straightening them up will make no difference anyway.

No, it doesn't work with a Samsung 50inch TV. That's all I've got to test it on.

It sounds like you are going to have to send your camera back to Panasonic for repair. What you describe is not normal for this camera.

How many micro-HDMI to HDMI cables have you tried ?

I have my GH4 mounted in a cage with a 4 inch micro-HDMI to HDMI converter cable bolted to the cage so can use full size HDMI cables with it. I was paranoid of breaking the GH4 micro-HDMI socket. ( I really hope Panasonic goes back to the GH3 style mini-HDMI socket for the GH5 )

sorry they never told me.
and i was lucky enough to discover the problem very close to the end of my warranty so i payed nothing.
it is a very common problem though. Tons of people have had to send it back for repair.
