What's up with 5K?

It's kind of weird to me. RED has had 5K cameras for a few years. Apple makes a 5K iMac, Dell makes a 5K monitor and I just saw that Rampant Design has a 5K package for some of their effects which is $1000 more than the 4K package which itself is $1000 more than the 2K package.

So is 5K the new thing?

When you actually do the math 5K is nearly twice as many pixels as 4K. It's like jumping from an 8.3 megapixel camera to a 14.7 megapixel camera. It makes sense as a shooting format for debayering purposes when mastering for 4K. Which is where I figured it would always stay, as just a shooting format. So it's interesting to see computers/monitors with that resolution and effects packages at that resolution since I would think you would apply those effects after a 4K downsample and thus only need 4K effects.

Are we looking at a new stardard here that sort of just came about? Are we just going to go with 5K instead of 8K because it's slightly better than 4K but more reasonable?

Doesn't the Panasonic DVX200 take a 5K signal and debayer it to $k?

13.35 MPX, which is sort of what, 4.95'ish? Sony A7RII does it from 15 MPX (5128x). Both oversample for 4K.

5K is not a format. Displays simply upscale the available signal.

We have 5k monitors because that just happened to be 2x the width and height of non retina iMac monitors and is purely a coincidence. A computer monitor is also not necessarily designed just for watching native video resolutions. It is built to display programs and software. If there are other 5k computer monitors they exist purely because they can and it gives people more screen real estate to do stuff.

Consider post for 4K deliverables. You want to view the content at 1:1, while still having screen real estate for your software's tool set panels.
