What's the use of the LP function?

It is strange that the dvx has an LP option. What was panasonic's thinking behind this? for if you want to accelerate a sunset and need more tape?
LP causes problems when digital editing? (on fcp4?)

LP gives you the option of longer recording times. The video quality is identical, but in LP mode your tapes will last 90 minutes instead of 60 minutes. It's not without its drawbacks, however -- LP recordings are more fragile, more prone to dropouts, and less likely to play compatibly in other playback devices. It's best avoided whenever possible, but if you have a circumstance where you just absolutely must squeeze some extra recording time out of a tape, LP is an option you may consider.
