What's the release cycle like?

Hi folks. I'm keen to return to video production after a 20 year gap and the af100 has caught my eye. Not knowing anything about how, today, the industry operates, I'm wondering how often models get a revamp. I see the af has been out for a year now, so are we expecting a markII anytime soon. Wouldn't want to commit to a purchase if it might be worth holding off for a few months more, that's all.

Personally, I don't think you will see an ugrade to the AF100 in the next 12 months...I do however think you will see a professional model sporting p2 and intra 422 at NAB this year. IMHO it will fall into the $8-12k range and compete directly with the new Canon C300.

Also, the AF100 is a great camera. I am buying the new Red Scarlet-X and have no plans to sell my AF100 because it does many things VERY well.

No way the AF100 will be changed for at least another year or two. The HPX170 was introduced in 2008 and is still unchanged three and a half years later.

If you like the AF100, there's no reason to hold off thinking there'll be a replacement soon, because there just isn't gonna be one anytime soon.

Didn't the DVX100A come out about a year after the original (and at the same price), and then the 100B about a year after that? Would it be out the realm of possibility if they released a AF100A with expanded focus, touchscreen, SD recording, 444 via HDMI, rear dial ISO control, and other tweaks and enhancements?

The 100A came out a year later, yes. But that was an abnormality in their normal schedule. The HVX200A came out three years after the original; the hpx170 and hpx500 have never been updated. The DVX100B stayed unchanged for four years or so.

It's not like cars where there's a new model every year.

Sure they might surprise us with some changed model, but there is no reason to expect it, there's certainly no scheduled update.
