What's the point?

Hey, I'm new to the whole DVX world--actually, about a week away from buying a DVX100B. But for the past week I've been stuck wondering if it's a good idea with the HD proliferation.

Bottom line is: I'm a writer hoping to start filming my work (short films at first), and really just learn the ropes of filmmaking on my own (with a couple better-experienced friends). I've wanted a DVX for a long time, can now afford the 100B, but I'm suddenly worried: am I doing the wrong thing? Should I go for HD?

So my question: what's the point of HD right now, unless you're going for broadcast on HD TV? Will films shot on a DVX100B really suffer because they're not on HD? Or is that a problem that's more like 2-3 years away (at least)?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

The DVX will be a great camera for several years. If you don't absolutely need to go HD, don't worry about it. I have no plans to go HD for a long time. The DVX suits my needs really well.

Yeah total agreed. Look at it this way.
how long did it take for people to switch to dvd player from vcd player.
if you are talking about home consumer, i believe that
there are not many who prefer HD plasma/lcd with HD dvd player
than normal dvd player and tv . The number are growing,
but honestly its still technology, it will take years before it mature.
looking at a min of 2 years, hence dvx is good enough
but if you are talking about professional work,
for theatre screening ...i dont think hvx is as good as 2/3 inch camera
but for less than SG10k i think thats best you can get out it.
I believe in getting what i need now, and not what i will need in the future.
coz equipment depreciation is amazing fast, comparing i just bought a mac g5,
now the intel one is catching up

ckmin, I was EXACTLY in your boat a month ago. I just bought my dvx100b. But before I did, I wondered if i should upgrade in price to a HD camera. Maybe I'd be missing out on the boat?

Luckily, I didn't upgrade in price to something that I don't need. I too will be using my camera for short films, documentaries, etc. And it's turned out to be an extremely portable, powerful, impressive camera. One question: will you be getting paid for your HD work? If so, then maybe you can justify the price.

I say buy the 100b and wire it, get it down, learn the in's an out's and you'll be one happy camper.

If you're still not convinced, check out the quality of films you can make on a DVX100 if you're good- http://www.pinelakefilms.com/index.html

Good luck!

Well... it is also possible to save for the HVX.. and just use it's SD functions until you are ready for HD...

of course it is extra money.. but if you are willing to save a little longer you could potentially future proof your investment.. but as a writer... you probably already know that it isn't the tech that makes a film..
