OK - we've been giving some of the less-popular aspects of the HVX an airing recently - but why don't we give the guys at Panasonic a break now, and tell them what features REALLY ROCK!
What is it you really LOVE most about this camera . . ?
One feature? Not easy. Let me list a bunch of 'em and you pick -- I love the true manual zoom and the every-bit-as-good-as-true-manual focus. Flexibility to do both 1080 & 720, and DV50 and DV as well. Tapeless is probably my favorite aspect of it. Long battery life. Gorgeous color and imagery. Great wide angle. Ability to get footage no other camera can, like true 36fps or true 48fps with the variable frame rates. Pulling a card out of the cam and plugging it in the computer and editing immediately. And that it's a professional production tool that is respected and in demand, and has paid itself off at least a dozen times over.
I second everything Barry said. Picking one is hard, but I would say the variable framerate is the winner for me.
You get manual zooms and you can achieve tapeless in other cams, but no camera even close to the HVX in price has variable framerates at full rez.
I only had it for 3 weeks now, but I have many people who dropped their jaws on the desk when they saw my footage from the HVX (sportshots mostly).
Variable frame rates and 4:2:2 color space(made possible witht the P2 as oppose to going with mini dv tape) were the big seller for me. I also love that the built-in lens is wider than most. Last, is the egonomic, all the buttons you need at the right place, except maybe for the shutter's... Great camera for the price...
And of course a great dvx/hvx community, with people really passionate about their craft.
Greatest Feature::::::
It weighs about a quarter of the weight of my XDcam.
I've spent the last 18 years travelling the world "running and gunning" with Betacam camera's, but i've had 6 months off work with a slipped disc in my neck, so i really love the weight of the HVX
Back in the early nineties I used to wish that someday, some company could make a video camcorder that could truly shoot video with filmlike cadence. True, progressive 24 fps widescreen video with variable framerates thrown in is a dream come true
1. The ability to record Mini-DV, DVCPro 50, 720p and 1080i with all those frame rates makes it like having 4 cameras. This is huge to independents like us.
2. The cost was pretty decent.
3. P2 Workflow. Quantagy announced they will stop making tape in April. This is a sign of things to come.
4. The size is much better then our BetaCam.
5. And yes...this community that for the most part is great at helping each other.
6. Don't forget, we got BARRY GREEN included with our HVX Purchase. I might move him up to #2 or 3.
The HVX's greatest feature is just about everything that they put in it. I am only disappointed with the things that are NOT in the camera. I LOVE this camera.
P2 is incredible and the best thing to happen to camera technology since actual film.
I also love the different gammas that are included.
These forums.
Barry's book.
The crisp beautiful images that are made with this thing.
Hope I dont sound like a broken record but its nice to see what you've shot right after you recorded it with out worrying about drop frame frame frame from a DV tape ruining your master tape. So P2 win's hands down. Killer images to... Cheers to you Panasonic...
