I've got a job designing an animated distributor logo and they want a price quote. They want something that is memorable but not overly complex. My idea includes a 3D flower. Help please! What should I quote them?

$25 an hour? If theyre big, $45 an hour.

If you charge by the hour, then what about rendering times? To me it all depends on the complexity and the lenght. For a company still logo I charge $150. I dont' charge them by the hour cause they'll know I will do it in 10mins. PM kai for price, thats what he dose for a living.

Charging by the hour is for employees; you're a contractor for this, right?

You should be structuring your fees to reflect (a) your professional time, both for design and animation (b) your hardware and software amortization (for example, if you're using Lightwave, you have much less to amortize than if you're using Maya, and render time on your systems has to be paid for, too...) and (c) your design/storyboard work (animating without approved boards is an invitation to last-minute client "but can't we just change this one little thing for free of course..."

Can you get them to point to an example of the degree of complexity and type of rendering they want? Being able to sign an agreement describing the moving elements, timing of the piece, rendered effects, et all can save you some nightmare squabbling down the road ("but we meant that we wanted...")

Just outta curiosity, what software are you using? I'm a Lightwave/Maya guy, myself...

If you're going to charge for rendering times, render your system on a 486 computer. You'll get more money.. ;)

Re: Whats the going rate for a distributor logo?

Well, lookit mister "I've got a 486 to render on..."

You wanna maximize system usage time charges, you render on a PC-AT, babay!

Soon as they port Renderman to the Timex-Sinclair Z89, we'll be switchin over to that...
