What's the difference between Motion and After Effects?

Just out of curiousity, what's the difference between Motion and After Effects? Cant you really do the same things on both? Thanks!

Preference. I like Motion but thats because thats what i learned to use early on. A friend of mine is very talented in after effects, but I've been able to recreate a few things he's done in motion without any trouble at all.

My MAIN beef with motion is having to change tabs to find different preferences for a given layer or attribute. TICKS ME OFF!@!!!!

If I want opacity I type T, if I want the mask layer I hit MM if I want to modify the effect F3. Someone want to tell me how to do THAT in Motion?

Although I LOVE the gpu nature of Motion it pains me because the keyframing isn't as useful or intuitive. I've got a good idea what is going to happen in AE if I do this or that or put this here or that there, but I have NO idea what will happen if I try to move something in Motion... oh crud, the red light was on... oh dang, it was OFF... wait... where was the gradient for that? Ugh.

I prefer Motion right now. It's a better fit for me and the work I tend to do which is more based on titles and quick animations. For more advanced compositing, I tend to lean more towards Shake.

In the end it's a matter of picking which one has more of the features you need and the way the application works. Having said that, After Effects is very popular, so if you want to get more into this kind of work, it might be a better option since you are more likely to find people that use it over Motion.

Also, this has been discussed on a few occasions here so you can find a lot of information on the topic by searching for those old threads.

Entirely different approaches to compositing are represented by each application.

AE is definitely more robust, but has been around quite a bit longer.

Motion does some pretty cool things, and a good GPU allow near or RT previews -- something the AE still cannot achieve.

But tools are tools.

Should never have been named Motion!

Should never have been named Motion!

I abandoned Motion and went with After Effects, because I couldn't find tutorials or support on the web for Motion!
The word "motion" is just too generic. Even on the Apple Developer Forum and in the built-in help functions, the term is just worthless in search engines.
I use a LOT of applications, so for me, the ability to rapidly access information on one of them is absolutely essential.

From a branding perspective, I think Apple made a grave error in going with "Motion" as a software title.

What if I named my production company "Video"?
I'd be easy to Google, for sure.

Well then there is Color... And of course that camera what's it again, oh yes just type red in google and see what you get... Now me I'm naming my new software "a", that way it will show up no mater what you searching for ;~)
