What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A TV?

Question: If the monitor is used to output your footage to see how it will look like on a TV, why not output it to a small TV that'll cost less than $100?

There's not a prayer in the world that you'll find two consumer TV's that will look like each other. (okay, perhaps a bit of an overstatement).

(but not much of one).

A monitor with SMPTE-C phosphors is a common baseline to compare what your image *actually* looks like. You can't take responsibility for the wide variety of looks among consumer televisions and the ways that the manufacturers tweak the presets. But you can take responsibility to make sure that on a properly adjusted baseline reference monitor, your image looks "good".

Once it gets to the consumer's TV, it's out of your hands.

Second Advantage is the quality being greater (number of lines, color reproduction) you can have a better view of your image's flaws like compression artifacts, so you have a greater ability to forsee defects that wouldn't resist a blow up or projection screening, and try to correct them beforehand. TV's will hide most of your artifacts from you.

Re: What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A

Not to forget that most TV's do not underscan for you, that is show you the full recorded image from the first to the last pixel. The dvx lcd does not even show you that! A last feature is that you might look out for is the changing of the aspect ratio the screen from a 4:3 to 16:9 at the touch of a button.

Re: What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A

I agree with almost everyone's points here, they are valid however I think that using a good (ie Toshiba 14") monitor fits me very well.. for editing purposes. If you are using it as a field monitor, you gotta get a real monitor.

The thing is, if you are getting a monitor for your NLE, you can tune it pretty close. You have your preview monitor on your NLE to see things like overscan etc. And there is something to be said about using a TV so you can see what it looks like on normal TV's, and get a baseline what people will see. On normal TV's you will notice things like illegal levels and low resolution strobing that a pro monitor wont show you.

Hmmm... interesting Jarred... so this Toshiba 14" is pretty good?  It's around $130 from amazon, so that's nice... what makes this TV a better choice as a monitor than other TVs?  And pardon my dumbness, but what exactly is overscan?

Re: What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A

the Toshiba is arguablly one of the best TV's at that size. IT has 16x9 switching and pretty accurate colors. Advent makes a very similar one but doesnt have the 16x9 thing but it does have a front panel button for Menus, so you can toss the remote. Overscan is the part of the image that the TV doesnt show, above and beyond Safe area. Even in your DVX EVF or LCD you dont see the entire image that DVX records.

I use the Toshiba 20" flat and for the price it rocks. i have a 14" in the loop too but find the image bends on the screen a bit. Ive been told the bending happens cos it's not getting enough power (I've got like thirty electrical devices on one fifteen amp circuit...sometimes you can hear the breaker crying
)

eeek sounds like you need to get the commercial upgrade package for your studio...call ure power company, or have a bigger amp breaker put in, ure risking all ure equipment... hope u at least have it surged, and power conditioned

It's all good Jourabchi...I've been running like this for a couple of years now. Trick is never turn it all at once, and if you have to then unplug the fish tank pump. When the fish turn blue, save the project and wait till the fish look good again before resuming ;D

a monitor consists of a CRT , a "television" also consists of a CRT

therefor it is a monitor,
its not a production monitor or a computer monitor but it is a Televesion Monitor

Re: What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A

Re: What's The Difference Between A Monitor And A

I've been struggling with the monitor issue. I just don't have the budget for a real monitor. Buying a good 13 inch TV sounds like a good idea, but then I thought of something. Back in the stone age my brother had a commodore 64 computer. It had a crt monitor that had a video input. Would this be a better choice than a tv since it has higher res? He no longer has his, but there are a few on e-bay, and I can cruise the thrift stores (a hobby of mine).

Any thoughts?
