i'm about to go the festival route for the first time and wanted to know what's the best way to get my film transferred to Digibeta or Beta SP? is there a cost associated with it?

shot the film 720/24 and edited in FCP 6.

I usually export my video to an uncompressed file and take a hard drive over to a post/duplication house. They run it off of FCP into whatever deck I need. Export using the Uncompressed 10bit codec, 1280x720 23.98 square pixels.

Oh yeah...it can be a bit expensive. Bring your own tape to save money.

Am I being tricked?

Am I being tricked?

I want to transfer footage shot in HDV from Final Cut Pro to Digibeta, for film festivals.

I called a transfer house here in San Diego and this is the workflow they say they have to follow:

HDV to DVCAM tape followed by a deck to deck transfer into Digibeta.

This doesn't make any sense to me!

Doesn't DVCAM have a much higher compression rate than Digibeta?

Any ideas on the right kind of workflow that a good transfer house needs to follow?

it's suspect. they either don't want to move the digibeta deck to the bay, or their bay doesn't have a kona card (or similar) so they plan to go to DVCAM via firewire and then make the dub to digibeta in their machine room. go somewhere else.

another piece of advice, most post house charge double for the cost of tape stock. you can save some dough by insisting that you bring your own.

Treehouse Media (or Voltage Video) in NYC charges me $150 for a 60 min digibeta master. I hand them a graid hard drive with an 10bit uncompressed quicktime and they hand me back the tape the next day.. stock is included.
