What's that flashing red X?

I was just shooting with my DVX and while i was rolling, a red flashing X appeard in the upper left-hand corner of the frame. I played back, thinking it might be a tape-break, but there was some weird pixellation for a few moments. Was this a head clog? I ran my cleaner thru it for 5 or 6 seconds (I just ran my head cleaner last week!) and everything after that was fine.
Any ideas? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Andrew

It's a common error. It happened to me one time. It simply means that the heads are dirty. You did the right thing by running the head cleaner, and all is well!

I just went thru the same thing. It happened to me when I was at 35 hours on my DVX-100A. I used the cleaning tape and got another 16 hours until it came back at 51 hours.

Once again I used the cleaning tape to finish my film. Evidently, the heads should be cleaned after 50 hours of use. In any event, I sent my camera off and had the heads professionally cleaned. I'm somewhat reluctant to use the cleaning tape too much. I've heard it can be abrasive on due damage to the heads if overused.

There is a very good tutorial that Barry Green put up on this site for those who want to clean the heads themselves. Personally, I'm somewhat hesitant to attempt it only because if I screw up, it's about 1K to get new heads.

Good luck.

How many times can one run a tape cleaner threw the DVX? I have less than 100hrs and noticed the red X a few times.

I'm at 146 hours and I've yet to get the heads cleaned. I've never had a problem with glitches or dropped frames. . .but is it important to get it cleaned regardless? If so, why? (out of curiosity)
