What's next to open clips in Finl Cut Studio

I'm stumped. I shot my first clips with my HVX, dumped them to my P2 Store, moved them to my external drive on my G5, now I'm having trouble getting Final Cut Studio to recognize them so they can be moved to the browser so I can get them to my timeline. I've read the threads regarding creating directories for each card (done that), and copying the folders (contents and txt) to the directories (done that), and I understand that somehow FCP is to wrap them in a QT blanket as it opens them , but I just get error messages as I try to import them into FCP (in the new studio). What am I forgetting to do? I must have missed any talk about the step.

Love the camera and the Store, just need some help now with FCP. I've really learned a great deal from this forum. Thanks

1. Make sure you are updated to FCP 5.04 (free web upgrade for FCP 5)
2. Import using Parnasonic P2 on the Import dropdown menu
3. Use + tab to search for your files.
4. Choose afolder that includes a content file copied from your p2

All your clips from that particular p2 'reel', including thumbnails of each take, should show up in the import window. Either choose a single clip, or choose "import all".

That's the basic procedure. If you are like me, the hangup is not being updated to 5.04. I sweated for 24 hours before realising that was the only issue.

Do everything TT recommended. But, it's a little confusing the first time. You can't just hit command-I to import P2 (unless you've changed the keyboard command).

Go to the file menu, then under "Import" choose "Panasonic P2..." This will bring up the "Import Panasonic P2" dialog box. If your footage doesn't show up, you may have to navigate to the "CONTENTS" folder. Do this by clicking on the "+" button. Then, once you've gotten to the "CONTENTS" folder, select it and click "Open." Thumbnails of your footage should now show up in the Import window. If you want to import all clips, click "Import All" at the bottom, otherwise you'll only be importing the ones selected. Hope this helps.

It works!

It works!

Hey, Guys,
Thanks so much for your help. It works! Now I have an oddity I can't explain. I shot like 8:28 worth of 720 24p and all that has shown up on opening into fcp 5.4 is 4:15. The first clip is all there, but the second is about half missing for a total of 4:15 worth of video. A third clip totally missing. I shot till card was full. Was that wrong? The pics are great, expecially the outdoor clip of my yard. Using the Octava MK-012 mike I can hear all the birds that were singing that evening, really cool. I have an AT4073a I maybe should have used outdoors, but either way it's new to me and very cool. WOuld like to figure out why half the footage is missing. It amounts to exactly (within about 2 sec) to half of what I should have been. The camera said it was recorded at 24p, so go figure??? This was shot using a 4gig P2.

Thanks,

Carey

Did you have two cards in? Could the second half have gone to the second card? There is a text file called LASTCLIP.TXT that must be copied as well, or you will lose the link between a clip that crosses over from card one to card two. I think you'll lose the second part of that clip if you dumped it. Otherwise, I can't explain it. Glad to hear you got everything working.

That makes sense, but my total time was still under what the capacity of a 4gig P2 should be at 720/24p. Could I possibly have had some other setting that would have consumed it all in 4.5 min or so? I know it was 720/24p, I'll check the second card and see, but if there's part of it on the second clip then it was using twice the memory it should have. Thanks,

Carey

In order to get the benefit of the lower data rates for 720p, you have to shoot in 720pN, not 720p over 60. Could that be the issue?

Hey,

Guess that's it. What I've been going by is some data I acquired from another site (adamwilt.com on 24p), where he says:

"The general rule is to shoot Advanced if you want to extract the original 24 frames/second for a 24fps edit or film-out...24p Advanced can be turned into pure 24p footage more cleanly than 24p standard, because every frame in the pure 24p timeline is pulled from a whole frame in 24p Advanced footage, whereas the C frame in 24p Standard is split across two different source frames ... "

So I guess if my intent is to ultimately do a film-out with my footage, I will be unable to take advantage of the reduced data rate available in Native.

Thanks,

Carey

Yeah, the 720/24pn will get you 10 minutes on a 4gb card. 24pa gets you a lot less. Also, so-mo will set you back quite a bit. So, if you were shooting 60fps, you'd also get a lot less footage on the card.

Cool! Makes sense. Thanks for your help. I'm shooting a short this summer, I'll post a link to a scene when I'm done.
