What's new in Axio 2.5?

First P2 MXF project on Axio/PPro2

First P2 MXF project on Axio/PPro2

Going a step further, and risking all in the midst of many of you pro cinema types, this is my first HVX (P2 MXF) job done on Axio 2.5 beta in 24pN, exported via Windows Media HD at 1/2 rez (640x360) for streaming purposes. This is WMHD @ 24p. Please allow a little time for buffering...better if you have a fast connection.

A few scenes are too hot, a few have audio challenges that I couldn't fix in Audition (exceeded my skills) and I had only one assistant to hold a mic or bounceboard (cheap Community College budget)....but nonetheless, in the name of science, this demonstrates that there is life outside of Avid/Edius/FCP when it comes to P2 MXF!

Nice work John--love those colors! Very interesting to see something done with Axio...appears to be quite the capable NLE. Did you do color correction with Axio? The only things I *might* have done differently (although you already explained the budget and lack of crew members) would have been to pull that lav off the main speakers blouse and stick it on a pole. The computer monitor in the cut with Dr. Bioteau distracted me a little--had me wondering who she was talking to... I did not like the angle of the closing scene because the mirrored name of the building (being backwards), and right next to the speakers head. These are just my thoughts, and not intended as criticism.

Overall I liked the piece, professionally done and well timed. Great use of outdoor light (HVX loves light) and your shots were both well composed and assembled. You held my interest throughout. I'd like to hear about any camera settings or post procedures. Thanks!

Best.

Thanks Dregenthal.
I used Cinelike V throughout, Chroma level +3, Color Temp +2, Master Ped -8 with P2 Setup at 0%.
Post procedures were purely Axio-related. Axio chromakey, 3D DVD (with rounded border), Color correction on a few of the shots to match contrasts. Masking and overlay of background in beginning shots done in After Effects. Digital Juice Jumpbacks HD were used as backgrounds. The scene of the 4 students walking in lab coats was 60f overcrank in 24pN. Most of the camera moves in the fast (music only) segment were done with Varizoom FlowCAM GT.

Yes...seems there's always stuff that could've been better. You don't "see" it during the shoot. The cost to get the actress back didn't seem worth reshooting that last scene...again, something I didn't think about during the shoot. Lav mic is a problem...always noticeable. Me coming from video rather than cinema, that's an easy mistake to make.

Overall, one of the things I'm most pleased about is the web delivery! PPro/Axio's WMHD encoder allows frame scaling (didn't know that until now) so I could cut the raster to a size that would stream fairly well. Next, that WMHD would allow a 24p encode. Very cool to stay 24p all the way through. Much leaner than 60i. It's a very nice workflow for my use here.
Thx again!

Dregenthal,
This is way past the original posting date so you'll not likely see this, but at your advice I now own a boom and a nice mic sock....and also a guitar mic stand (for doing close up interviews) and plan to not use a lav mic any more. Appreciate the advice.
