What's gone wrong..?

Hi Guys,
I’m really puzzled……..
I drove down to my nearest DVX100 dealer yesterday, to see and demo the camera for the first time. I’ve been really excited about the DVX for the last year or so having read all the great reviews and various forums. After recording some footage with the DVX , I brought it home on mini DV tape and played it on my wide screen TV from my Sony TRV900 using the mini jack composite out put. To my horror the image didn't look that great..! Slightly hazy, not sharp,a pinkish look on skin tones, just average, not what I was expecting to see from the DVX. The guy who demonstrated the camera didn't seem to know too much about it, and wasn’t even sure if it was in 25p mode. He insisted it was, but as I said the footage isn't great. Please tell me that this must be the camera being set up wrong, or that it won’t look right playing from the composite out put from my Sony….

I wanted this camera to be so good……..

Cheers

if you think you can just stick a tape into a camera and not have any idea wha the settings for image control are, and shoot in crap lighting in some store and get great imagery just because its a good camera.. you are sadly mistaken.

... the look right out of the camera will totally depend on so many things. . all the camera image control settings (being a demo i imagine they are all screwed up from people playing with them)-regardless of what recording mode (25p-50i) or whatever its in.. and the lighting and exposure and focus and blah blah blah.. you can make your image look like crap or you can make it look reaaly good. just like a still camera. its not the camera that makes beautiful images.. its the cinematographer. just look at some of the clips or screen grabs posted here and that should be immediately apparent. .. youll see both barf, and beautiful art from the same camera.

speaking of barf, I saw someone barfing through my camera while filming my zombie flick!! I guess fake blood doesnt taste too good

The Sony's are actually designed for point and shoot, with better auto capabilities but much less capable manual settings. If a typical salesman was "shwoing you the camera", it probbaly had white balance set wrong. Maybe it wasn't even in auto-focus. But 24p (25p) does not have autofocus anyway in the 100 (100a has focus assist, but slow reacting compared with 60i (50i) true autofocus modes.

This is not a "buy friday, shoot wedding saturday camera", but the end results are SO MUCH better than those other guys. You have to choose what suits your style and desires.
