What's a DSLR killer anyway?

Also people say $6000 for a Scarlet but we all know that isn' t final price to actually have a "working" scarlet. You still have to buy lenses, lens adapters, some sort of storage, a evf or monitor, etc. So you're def. gonna be forking out a lot more than just that $6000 as opposed to a $800 body, a $100 50mm 1.8 lens, a $48 class 10 32gb sdhc card and a $15 wal-mart tripod bare bones to get you started.
Working FIXED Scarlet is 6k$ and it includes everything you mentioned. How about you stop posting about things you have no idea what you are talking about.

I cannot see more than 5% of DSLR users wanting to use a 2/3" sensor with fixed lens. Wide open, it will have an s35 eqv. of f5.6, it is just not enough for the DSLR crowd.
It's not enough for amateur web shooters, but it's enough for hollywood elite and it's enough to win multiple OSCAR's. Go figure. Scarlet is for serious work and SDLR's are for hoybbyists.

I was halfway scared to death to make the dslr jump because so many people on here were crying about it. I finally did and I can say I've never had an overheating problem since I got a 7d almost a year ago and I've had aliasing/moire like 10% of the time of Ive used it and it definitely wasn't life ruining as you all make it.

Yep. I was on the fence for a long time in part because of the intense whining people were doing about these "issues" and was pleasantly surprised when I got my hands on a 5D and started shooting with it. I'd liken some of those who complain bitterly about all the shortcomings of a DSLR (especially those who claim they're unusable) to folks who never learned how to ride a bicycle because they found it too difficult.

@isle goodness gracious dude calm down lol. "things you have no idea what you are talking about" Since when were you working for RED and know the exact msrp? For all any of us know this camera could be priced much higher or much lower. Everything thus far has been speculation with that camera.

Policy of RED seems to make money with modules and accessories. I'd be surprised if the fixed comes out of the box. But I hardly believe that a fixed-zoom-lens will smoke old Nikkor glass.

Pro's that got to test the lens said the lens itself is almost worth the 6K$. It must be pretty awesome piece of glass.

Guys....everybody's talking about this as if Canon is standing still.

Canon has not released any new DSLR technology since the 7D camera ( every camera after the 7D has been a rehash of the same tech ), so they are long over due for the next generation of cameras.

...Will the 5D MK3 even show up this year?

Well don't say that 6K$ Scarlet needs lens, monitor etc when it doesn't. and that's information everyone should know by now who are even remotely up to date for the new cameras that have been on the news for the past year.

...and "subject to change." :)

That is one of the greatest things with RED. They asked late last year if people wanted HDRx on Scarlet and poll said yes so they added better hardware on it that is capable to record HDRx. It added 1000$ more to the price os Scarlet, but 18 stops of dynamic range for video is out of this world.

That is just one example of why RED's way of working is great. They add the features and changes that people want. Not like Canon etc who don't add * and if they do, they will do it after 9 months of wait. Not even talking about GH2 which is pretty much joke for real work (since it doesn't shoot 25p).

@isle Yea I was caught up on every line they posted on reduser.net about the camera but then I got tired of keeping up around 2009.

Not sure many oscar winners used a fixed lens though? Unless you shoot ENG, need a crash cam or think f5.6 is fine (it's pretty good), I can't see why you would buy Scarlet fixed. 2/3" is a fantastic format, but for feature film work.. personally I think the format needs interchangeable, fast lenses.

Like I already said, I will buy an Epic-S if nothing is better when it launches... but there is no point living on planet RED until things start to ship. I personally don't see a $6k package coming out... but will be happy if it does, i'll grab one for sure (cinema).

You mention about the HDRx poll (that was 52% in favour, hardly full backing)..... If they made a poll "shall we ship Scarlet now or keep adding features, cost and delays"? what do you think the outcome would be?

Feature creep is a major problem with RED.

Scarlet Fixed lens is 7.5mm-63mm f2.4/T2.6 (FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm). That's pretty good range and pretty wide too. Black Swan for example was shot mostly with 16mm. The lens is also fast enough for feature films where you always light your scenes properly.

The real question is do you need S35 sensor for your work. You have to ask that from yourself without lying to yourself. Just think all the great movies shot in 16mm. Why do you need S35 sensor when people do amazing OSCAR worthy job with 16mm? The answer is 99% people don't.

I mean the most wanted advantage of S35 size sensor for these DSLR users is shallow DOF, but the great majority of videos shot with DSLR's have focus issues. These people scream for a feature they don't even know how to use and would do way better job with 16mm size sensor.

Well, that's still a majority.

and that was just one example. There was someone who asked for a feature and two days later it was added to the new firmware. I think that is pretty amazing.

One thing that I don't like about RED is the estimated delivery dates. They keep changing them as they want to make the cameras even better than originally planned. But they shouldn't say that the camera is propably coming summer 2010 when they know themselfs that they are addicted to make the cameras as good as possible. Everything else they do publicly is great, but the realease date should be set to the stone when announced (althought they haven't ever said any too specific release dates).

But there is more to that too. RED is small company compare to giants like Canon etc, and they don't release their cameras like Canon which produces thousands and thousands of cameras and when they are all ready they start selling them. RED starts sellling their cameras as they come from the production line so the customers can get the cameras faster. That's also so they can get feedback from the first users before starting to sell the final product, as what is happening with the EPIC-M's as we speak.

Which professionally done DSLR films that you have seen had focus issues?

It's very easy to add features to a camera that doesn't exist.

The Scarlet.

Doesn't.

Exist.

Period.

It can't "kill" anything. It. Doesn't. Exist. Vaporware. Nada. Nothing. Zero. Zilch.

Again:

The Scarlet.

Doesn't.

Exist.
