It's kinda pointless, as the look is most likely set in stone right now.  But since we are all dreaming here, so let's give it a try: it would be a mix of the DVX, the Z1, and the XL2.  That is if it's not a shoulder mount unit.  LCD placement like the Z1, convenience and functionality of DVX, and quazi shoulder-mountable (as an option) and with lens like the XL2.  There are variations to that theme, but I don't want to be here all night.

Keeping costs low, same carbon copy of dvx100/dvx100a

Double benefit of lens/accecories reusable and r&d cost for pana

Ideal, no tape hdx200a with removeable dock for 3.5 inch sata hard drive & orange color (I will make this happen when i work for pana)

Eventually i will be working close with Pana JVC & Matsushita to bring new and exciting products to you... stay tuned

should be definitely small, no shoulder mount.

im pretty sure that its been stated it will be a palmcorder style camera so i think were safe on that one.

I agree that the HDX should have a look similar to the DVX as it is both very professionally looking but still doesn't scream "shooting permit"

Ha, even funnier, that isn't a WV-D5000, I think the little brother was the 3260 but the 5000 was all black.  Single chip, about 400 lines of res, and circa 1986.  The year I started with Pana. Even funnier/sad, that looks like a Sony power supply and the connector they show there is not the connector to connect to this camera. Buyer beware on eBay.

i wouldnt mind a shoulder cam like the xl2 shoulder cams are not as bulky as they once was. but it should look like the 100a but maybe with 2-3 pounds added to it. i dont mind shooting on tape i just wish the minidv would get bigger in size like the full sized 120 min mq tapes. i hope the color of the cam stays the same black and dark gray.

Jan's the only one here who knows, and all she's said is that the balsa mockups aren't the final design. But unless there are a tape drive and half-inch CCDs (necessitating a somewhat bigger lens), I would guess the camera is about the size of the balsa cams. They actually had a pretty efficient form factor, given that the zoom lens is the only component on a solid state camera with any real moving parts.

I would like it to take as many design cues as possible from the Z1U

from the high quality LCD to its placement on the top front end of the camera. The iris knob. The solid feel, the tape load on the smart side of the camera (left side)

Take those cues, along with the basic look of the Z1 and go a step further with even better ergonomics.

None of this will happen, but one can always hope.

I have a strong suspicion that the Balsa mock-ups will not be too different in design for new HDX. As much as we think it should be bigger because it will look more professional, I think the smaller size in more situations will be more practical. Makes run-and-gun for filmmaking and journalism, that much easier.

Bob,

So inspite of all of the number of times I have said that the mockups that we have seen are nothing like the delivering camera, you think that you have the ability to foretell and state for a fact that this is what it will look like.
Why? I have said this is not what it will look like, I have seen the real mock up. I can only say that I believe you won't be disappointed.

I know it is frustrating that we can't show it to you, that we can't talk about all the cool stuff that it does, but I cannot. We can talk about workflow, we can talk about DVPROHD, we can talk about how to work with P2 as a medialess concept.

Don't mean to sound harsh but please folks managing the wrong information is taking more time than what should be happening here and that is managing the right information.

Lets' talk about workflow.

Jan,

I wasn't trying to start any bad rumors or anything. I was guessing like everyone else. I was mearly stating that everyone seems to be freaking out that it will look like the mock-ups. I personally think it should only be as large as it needs to be. having shot a film on the DVX in India was fairly smooth because of the small form factor. No I don't have any info on what the new camera will look like. I merely said "suspect". I do appreciate the amount of info that you have already provided.

I look forward to what Panasonic has to offer regardless of the form factor,

Jan's made it pretty clear that this particular camera won't be the balsa wood mockup. However, if we were to read between the lines, which is what we're all desperately trying to do (since nobody will give us any actual lines to read!) ;), would it be unreasonable to think that Panasonic may someday produce a tiny palmcorder like Bob's alluding to?

Sony, after all, brought out the DVCAM lineup, and they introduced the (I believe it was called) PD1 as the second DVCAM camcorder. It was a tiny cigarette-pack-sized camera, but recording to the DVCAM format, and hey, there was certainly a use for it. Now, I guess they don't have any comparable camera in the lineup anymore, but I can see why a smaller camera would be desirable, and P2 would give you the option of making a pretty small camera (although, those P2 cards look like they're probably about as big as a DV tape, so maybe a multiple-P2-card camera might not be able to be much smaller).

I too apologize if I've been giving out wrong information. It's tough not to speculate, when the only info we've been given is absolutely tantalizing, and then is backed up with statements like "it'll blow HDV away" or "you will not be disappointed" or whatever!

I think it's the PD100, and now the newest model is thePDX10. Or are you talking about something smaller?

Much smaller. It was, I think, a DVCAM version of the DCR-PC7. It was about the size of a pack of cigarettes or a small paperback book, in a similar form factor.
