What would I need to work in real time (AE CS5)

Right... let's say money is sort of not an obstacle.

If I wanted to slap a hardcore grading slash optical lens flare plugin or two and work without RAM previews etc.

Please don't lecture me on workflow, I've been down that alley with Bill Nye the local science guy and I am very often tempted to smack his smug 'reder render render' face with a teenager's sock!

Is there a hardware solution for this are are we still in 'eighties' mode. (Super Computer required to calculate average pee pee distance).

You would need to get Adobe to change how AE works.

If money is (almost) no object, just get the fastest workstation money can buy. Today, it would be a dual 6-core Xeon with Hyper Threading.

Dell and HP have workstations which you can build...You'd be looking at around $11-$13K with 24GB RAM and a Quadro.

Or you can build it yourself and save a few thousand.

Two of the benefits of going the HP/Dell route are warranty and the ability to lease over time.

Sure..if you're tech savvy and know how to build a computer then that's fine. I was referring more to the on-site warranty offered by the major manufacturers.

If money is not a significant consideration, and real time is the goal, you should look at Autodesk solutions like Inferno and Flame. Inferno is very close to real time at film rez.
