What will the CCD's HVX-200 be?

The current issue of DV magazine had a little bit on it, saying:

"The camera is built on 3 newly built 16:9 CCDs"

That's all the info I've seen on it so far.
Everything is speculation until NAB.

No no, I heard they are using a single Foveon-Chip to beat the competitors.;)

Just becasue someone on the net says that, doesn't make it true. Don't get me wrong, that would be great if it were a half inch sensor or larger, and there has been quite a bit of speculation that because of the 82mm (supposed) thread size it is to accomodate this larger chip. But it is what it is, speculation, and just becasue someone says that it must be the way it is, doesn't mean that it will.

Exactly.

There are several reasons to believe it is 1280x720..
It has to adequately cover the 1080i/p and 720p resolutions without too much compromise.

Panasonic's 720p camera, the AJ-HDC27V uses 1280x720 CCD's.
Panasonic's 1080i camea, the AJ-HDX400 uses 1280x720 CCD's.

It is reasonable to believe that a camera that is designed to record both resolutions could use sensors with the same number of pixels without compromise.

THIS IS ONLY AN EDUCATED GUESS.
I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE PIXEL COUNT OF THE HVX200.

Please disregard this dis-information.
There is no way in the world the HVX200 will have 2/3" CCD's.
That isn't even reasonable in SD.

It sounded good at the time I wrote it. Sorry, But are you sure Wells? If you are 100% sure I will delete it. Let me know. But I thought I found a clue from another post below:

But it would be interesting to know this info.

After NAB is probably when I will get back to this question. I am so overloaded with too many things to do, I cannot begin to give this question a good well thought out answer. So please ask it again following NAB. It will likely be buried. I am actually trying to get the old white papers posted on the website, but we have to find them and then there is NAB. So please understand, I am not dissing the question. The fact that you love the VariCam should tell you something.

Maybe she was alluding to the number of pixels on the CCD, and the way HDTV formats are handled, which was the original question? Dunno, but 2/3" on a consumer cam is just way out there. I don't think they'd do 1/2" even. It seems that chip size is one of those factors that keep separates the low end from the high.

Ya, it's cool.

That post refers to the question, "How do you get 1920 pixels on playback when the camera only has 1280?" Basically, the short answer is magic.

That post indicates nothing about the physical SIZE of the chip, only the PIXEL DENSITY and OUTPUT RESOLUTION.

How much do ya think the chips cost anyway? 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 Who knows, since the Varicam is so expensive and not selling as fast as the HVX will, they might have alot of spare 2/3" chips laying around and need to blow them out.

I am willing to bet just about everything I own* that this camera will NOT have 2/3" chips.

I agree, but you never know. When P2 and 1080-24p were announced the jaws hit the floor and probrably caused some to lose a few bets. There will be a few more surprises at NAB, we just don't know what.

I got chastised for saying this phrase about a month ago, but I'll say it again slightly toned down:

"I'll give my left *Jingle Bell* if the HVX200 had 2/3' CCD's. Hell, in that case I'd give both *Jingle Bells* and then try to sacrafice my family's and other DVXuser's *Jingle Bells* as well."

In saying that I believe of course it is complete nonsense that Panasonic would do something that daring. It's like saying "Hey, let's undercut our Varicam sales by 60,000 dollars per camera!!"

We only wish that would happen. Again, I think some people are hoping for Miracles. I'll be the first to admit, I'm almost convinced the new camera will be able to walk on water and turn water into wine *OUT OF THE BOX*!! Those are pretty amazing feats in and of itself....but seriously 2/3' inch on a 5-7k High Def camera.....that would be the ultimate miracle of "raising the dead" cause' it just *AIN'T GONE HAPPEN*. ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. WILL NOT HAPPEN. CAN NOT HAPPEN. CAN'T HAPPEN. REFUSES TO HAPPEN. WHAT OTHER WORDS CAN I USE?

Let's just be happy with 1/3' CCD's with *decent* low light performance and latitude. Or maybe a REALLY nice CMOS sensor....but I'd place my bets on the 1/3' CCD. Ok...I'm done!!
