What video card do I need to get 1080p preview and dual display

Hello all-
My video editing box:
- HP MCE PC
- AMD Phenom quad core 1.8ghz
- 6.0 GB RAM
- 64 bit Windows 7
- NVIDIA Geforce 9300 GE, 256mb dedicated memory

Has done well with 720p 30fps video while being edited in Sony Vega Platinum 9.0 (can preview OK, etc).

Now that I have a Canon 7D and am editing 1080p 30fps video, the previewing is not usable at all! (slow, jerky)

To add to this situation, I'm adding a 2nd 24" LCD (both 1920 x 1080) for editing (edit one side, preview the other side I hope).

So, based on the system specs above, from your experience, what kind of pumped up video card will I need in order to get smooth preview for 1080p video?

Thanks!
Gavin

Thanks. What format would you transcode to? What's the best workflow for this assuming I'm using Vegas.

Any settings/filters to apply while transcoding for enhanced quality? (I know it depends on what you're doing...).

Thanks,
Gavin

Cineform is your answer. As for video card, I recommend the Nvidia quadro cards. They won't speed up your preview (Cineform will take care of that issue) but they do a nice job handling the video tasks. An they can accelerate certain effects like Magic Bullet stuff.

PerroneFord- are you talking about NeoHD from Cineform?

What's the goal with transcoding, what format is best for editing in Vegas?

Neoscene should be all you need. The goal of transcoding is to give you a much better codec for editing. It has better color support, it holds up to multiple generational encodes better, and it moves on the timeline in real time instead of the 4-8fps playback you are probably getting now with your 7D footage.

Do you know what the output file extension and encoding format is when using Neoscene?

Also- can it do sound sync (separately recorded audio) and any noise reduction on video or audio?

Thanks.

Yes. .AVI And the encoding format is Cineform. Cineform is a codec.

NeoScene is not an editing program. It simply transcodes video into the Cineform codec to be used by an editor. All that other stuff you are talking about is done in the editor...

After editing can we render back as cineform within vegas?
Cineform does not show up in rendering option when I choose to save as AVI.

I have it installed but I cant see it in vegas render settings, I am only able to use it as a stand alone application to convert mov files.

When i choose render as AVI then cineform should be visible. Any clue whats wrong?

Did you buy the program? And have you restarted your machine/Vegas since the installation?

No not yet, just downloaded the trial since I have read a lot of praise about it. As of now I am using MPEG_Streamclip that does the job well but now I see that cineform neo scene has a bit more options to convert which no other codec offers.

I did restart the computer but no it does not show in vegas rendering option. I choose render as > Video for windows (*.avi) then my guess is that it should show in templates, but does not.

Should the name cineform appear in that template list?

So this program (cineform) will install codecs on the system- do you realize a "preview benefit" without pre-converting/tanscoding the files, or do you run a separate trascode, then start editing and previewing in Vegas?

Gavin
I dont see any benifit unless I transcode the 5D video files, as of now I am running it as a stand alone application, it offers a batch facility. Batch is quite a useful feature when you have 100s of clips in HD, it can run whole night while you sleep & start your editing in the morning with a smooth timeline.

ranjan- What program are you using for bulk transcode, what's the codec, and what's the file extension?

Thanks,
Gavin

Gavin, I mentioned earlier that I have been using MPEG_Streamclip but that does not have a batch facility, I use it & transcode as avi with it.
MPEG_Streamclip does have a batch facility just found out as informed by Perrone

Where as cineform neo scene has a batch facility, here is a screen shot.
