What version of Avid and roughly what power deskstop will I need to edit HD footage?

It doesn't have to be uber fast or anything. What version of Avid fully supports 720pn and 1080i (cheapest preferably) and roughly how powerful a PC will I need?

I'm still trying to determine what my system requirements will be for an HD editor I need to build. I can tell you that my P4 2.4ghz 1gig RAM system can't handle 720pn smoothly. Almost, but not quite. I'm thinking that for HD I'll have to go for a Dual 2.4 GHz Xeon processor.

You will need Avid Xpress Pro (link).

I have an AMD Atholon 64 3200 with 1 gig of RAM. You think that can handle 720 PN? Or, if not, do you think an extra gig of RAM will do it?

I would certainly test it on your system, even you had to double the RAM it'd be worth it... I also tested my notebook: P4 2.0 ghz 512MB RAM and had okay results on 720pn. Considering how much faster that AMD is you have a good chance of getting it to work on 720pn.

if i were to recommend you on building a pc system, i would have to tell you that its worth it getting an AMD Dual-Core Opteron 165, its cheaper than the other opterons, and it is extremely easy to overclock it, EVEN with the stock fan on it, i heard of people overclocking it to like 2.5 ghz. it will certainly be cheaper than having to get xeons. if you read around you would find some texts on overclocking it. they'll tell you exactly how to do it and which fans to get.
