Hello, I am using a 2006 Imac to edit some BMCC pro res footage and this is terrible slow. I guess I need a new computer. I would like to edit footage from a red scarlet and from BMPC4K. and use resolve and premiere.

I am not really familiar with the computer requirements. Can I get a new Imac? what Type? I thought bout maybe the second one:

Do I actually need a mac pro?

Assuming you are using FCP X, your best bet would be an iMac with a discrete graphics card, which would be the one with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M.

plus also keep in mind that on the 21.5" iMac, you cannot add more RAM after delivery (the RAM is soldered to the board)

As David above has suggested, the discrete graphics card is a huge bonus.

The other item that will speed things up considerably is using SSD rather than HDD.

Also, depending on software that you use, upgrading to an i7 processor could be a very worthwhile investment.

I suggest the middle 27" iMac, i7 processor, 256GB SSD

a) as it comes with 8GB RAM instead of 4GB on the 21.5" model
b) comes with discrete video card with 2GB RAM
c) 27" screen instead of 21.5"
d) RAM can be upgraded
e) max of 32GB can be fitted to 27" models compared to MAX of 8GB on "middle" 21.5" model or 16GB on top 21.5" model
f) you can upgrade to i7 AT TIME OF ORDER

it's $1100 more expensive than the 21.5" model your looking at.

It will do what you want and more for a very long time.

this, plus remember that dealing with video one must have an external harddrive. Preferably a bunch of them in a enclouser in a RAID 0,5,6... setting.

RAID 0 can be done via disk utility (mac app)

RAID 5,6 in iMac situation ,where you dont have the oportunity to insert Pcie RAID card, can be done by buying enclouser with this setting, it can be change if you make up your mind via app which the enclouser comes with.

such enclouser is for example promise pegasus r4,r6,r8. Maxxdigital makes some... There are a lot of brands making RAIDs for macs.

I will using Premiere CS6 or Resolve, no Final Cut. Is this Imac still the best option? Could I edit red footage as well? the thing is I don´t think I can spend the extra 1100 dollars
