What type of DV tape to use?

marketing horsecrap.

i got word from someone in the tape manufacturing biz that tape is more or less tape and that there are only a handful of suppliers of bulk tape. apparently, the "higher-quality" tape comes from raw material closer to the center of the roll. i forget the details, but i think it had something to do with the extrusion process?

back when i used to use tape (back in the old days). i used these and never really had any problems attributable to tape:

you are aware that the 200a shoots SD to tape and not HD right?

I have read that the lubricants used in different brands of tape may not be compatible and will possibly contribute (when mixed) to gumming up the drive surfaces.
So, there may be wisdom in picking one brand and staying with it.

wgzn: yes, I'm aware. I plan on using P2 soon but there are some upcoming projects where HD isn't necessary.

Al MacLeod: my point exactly. Even when I had my handheld consumer Sony cam I used Sony tapes.

Everyone will tell you something different. There is no need to buy Panny tapes because you have a Panny cam. I got 700 hours on my dvx100 with Sony tapes and never had a problem. Rumor has it you should pick a brand and stick to it. Use any brand you want. Panny is generally more money. I buy Sony in bulk form BJ's and it generally pretty cheap. Stay away from the 83 min tapes since they have a thinner tape and may break. Other then that pick something cheap and stick with it.
