what type of computer do we need to edit

I hadn't put much thought into the editing process until a friend of mine mentioned what type of "smokin' computer" we are all going to need to edit HD footage. I currently have a dual 2G Mac, but now that is the smallest one you can order from Apple. Will we all need to upgrade to the fastest thing out there?

What is the least computer/processor you would suggest to work with?

Actually I think what you have should be fine. You may need more RAM and another hard drive, but I think that 2G should do the job. (I only have 1.8!:embarasse)

I agree with steinj....people can edit totally uncompressed HD on P3's and G4's. Your dual 2.0 will work fine with DVCPRO HD...its about RAM and drives (I mean a seperate SATA or RAID setup for best performance)

Yeah! Don't worry about your computer with DVCProHD. It'll run fine! You still have a kick ass computer. As steindj and esperman said, more RAM and HD is probably more what is suited for you.

Ironically, you'd probably want a much better computer for HDV.

yes, HDV is using CPU for uncompressing and recompressing.

RAM, a lot of RAM on the graphics board and a RAID are needed....

Dual 1GB for DVCProHD? Again, no problem!

For HDV? You'll yawn al the way through your project.

I agree. I think you definitely need at least a 1 GB RAM for DVCProHD, at least that's what FCP on my 1.8 PowerMac tells me.
