What TV format?

My local Music Channel (I live in a PAL country) recently posted their guidelines for music video submissions for a particular show:
Accepted formats
  • Playable DVD (PAL, Region 4 or Region 0)
  • Digital Betacam (PAL, 625 lines, frames/second)
  • Mini DV (625 line, 25 frames/second)

Please note that:

  • Standard Definition will be accepted only. HD media (including Blu-Ray) will NOT be accepted.
  • Computer file formats (such as MPEG, WMV and MOV) will NOT be accepted.

  • Preferred Aspect Ratio is 16:9 (Full Height Anamorphic), but 4:3 is also accepted.

DVCPRO HD is not mentioned, but from these guidelines, I am not sure whether they would accept HD or only SD. If they only accept SD, I guess DVCPRO 50 SD would be the way to go. Not sure why they say MPEG formats would not be accepted when DVD is usually MPEG2.

    Comments would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a Digital Betacam Camera or Deck. I own a Panasonic HPX172. I would like to use DVCPRO HD, but I"m not sure how I would convert that to Digital Betacam.

If you use Final Cut why not just make a DVD using Compressor and DVD Studio Pro?
You can shoot in HD and deliver an anamorphic PAL DVD.

Would a DVD version look better than a downconverted HD master on Digital Betacam Tape?

The DVD version will look just fine... just make sure you use Dolby for your sound... this will give you more head room on the DVD and will play better...

Although they are going to stip out the info from the DVD and broadcast that... how they do that will determine the final look that will go to air...

As long as you give them a program with white levels correctly adjusted for broadcast the show will look fine..
