So, as far as I know my GH2 has never been dropped, or bumped particularly hard for that matter, but the other day as I picked it up to mount it on the tripod, I hear a small rattling noise. I shake the camera gently, and sure enough, there is a rattle. I take off the lens to be sure it's not in it (had the 14-140 mounted), and the rattling persists inside the camera body. I'd say it sounds like a small plastic piece kind of rattle. Very light, not like a screw or nut (but you never know). I've used the camera 3 times since then with nothing out of the ordinary in its operation.
So, what would anyone who has had to send in the GH2 suggest. A local camera shop? Do it myself? I'm pretty handy with electronics, and I've taken apart camcorders before, (and xboxes and computers and monitors and various others) but all were dead (except the computers) and so the risk was minimal.
I dread leaving that piece to rattle around and cause some other damage, but the cost of repair may be more than the body is worth, or at least some portion of it. With the GH3 out, and in my sights (though I'm happy with my GH2 for now, and will only be buying the 3 when the price drops a bit) that money could also go toward that.
So, any suggestions, commissary statements, anecdotes?
