what to buy dvx 200 or hmc 154 / 170

if ANY of those were the "best camera to buy" nobody would buy any others. the answer depends on a number of variables...
what kinds of things and situations do you shoot? whats your budget? who are you and who do you want to be?

we cant give you any answers without knowing that...

If money was no object, and you don't need tape, then the HPX170 would be my pick of those three.

I would only go with the HVX200 over the HPX170 if you absolutely have to have the ability to record standard-def video on DV tape.

As for the HMC150(or 154) vs. an HPX170, it's all about the price tag and the features. The HPX170 does standard-def, it does variable frame rates, it has HD-SDI output, it does time lapse/intervalometer recording, loop recording, and it records to P2. If you can't afford P2, or don't need any of those other features, then the HMC150 is a compelling alternative at a much cheaper price point.

I don't see the need for actual HD cameras! No offense... but only 20% of Americans own HDTVs, and I am fine with my DVX100B... Unless you can afford an HVX/HMC/HPX, then you should just get a used DVX and then you can pay more to get more stuff like a 35mm adapter, mic, tripod, mattebox, light kit... I am not dissing high definition, and I like random access to footage rather than tape, but you can still shoot true 16:9 on the DVX and then just export it as a 1080 or 720 video file or you can uprez it...

its actually the HVX200, not the DVX200...

Theres a DVX100 but thats SD...

There is a few new features on the HPX170...

You can make the focus ring an iris ring when in AF, there's some other scene file settings, the lens is even wider, HD-SDI output, locking 6-pin firewire port instead of the flimsy 4-pin on the others... There is a lot more features but I don't own one so it's hard for me to answer this question.

HPX170 also has a built in waveform monitor which is pretty awesome. Its also lighter than the HVX200a,

there are a LOT of features that make the hpx170 better than the hvx200 - the most important to me is better low light performance.

but an hpx170 and a hvx200(a) - note the (a) in the model name. are in theory technically the same camera from an image quality standpoint. biggest difference being the 200(a) still has a tape drive. the 170 does not.

so waht about the HMC versus hvx200a? If price was the same, which would you choose..?

and also which would you choose if price was a factor?
