hi all, this is my very first post, so i just want to say thanks to all of you out there with the knowledge and expertise to help us newbies trying to break into the industry!

OK, first question, I got avid express HD 5.0, installed it, and when i went to open, it said "No dongle was found."

what is a dongle and why wasn't it found?

i need some help here

thanks all

I'm sorry, I can't help you... i just had to reply to your post because that's a hilarious error message.

"What the f* is a dongle?" hahaha

a dongle is a security device that is actually a peice of hardware that has hardcoding in it and is required to be found present on the system in order for the software which requires it to work.. its like a hardware key. it ensures you can only use your cpoy of the software 1x.

most of the time they install on the LPT/parrallell port and have a pass-through connection .. but they could be usb or whatever. anyway they come with any licensed retail copy of the software that requires them .. hope that helps.

Sounds like someone with a "not so legal" copy of the software. If you had bought it, you would have seen the dongle in the box.
losers description is correct.

Avid uses a USB Dongle I believe. And if you don't have a *Legal* copy of the software.....or you are using it for *Demonstration* purposes....the Dongle check is easy to bypass. You can find a Software Crack for it in 2 minutes using Google. But then....that might be illegal, depending on where you live.

But if you want to stay *legal*....just download a Demo Copy of it from Avid's website.

uuhh - I think that's illegal no matter where you live.....

Not in all countries!!

But being that the person is claiming to be from *Omaha*.....I guess that would make it ILLEGAL :(

It not so much "legal" as it is completely unenforceable in some countries. That’s what’s driving the MPAA, the RIAA and the software industry crazy and some countries use it as political leverage: “Ok we’ll check into piracy if you’ll open this tariff a bit”, etc.

Yeah....I never said it was *LEGAL* in other countries, but there's not much they can do about it. Viva La Software!! "Big Ups" to Bram Cohen!!

Oh...Two words:

HONG KONG!!

yeah thanks all for your input,

as far as legality is concerned, i thought i downloaded the trial version and thats where i received the error message. I wanted to see what all the Avid hype was about, but thus far havent been able to even see the program.

thanks thou

that stuff makes me sick.. people seem to think its all fun and games and ok untill they are the ones who own the company or media getting ripped off.

Yeah sorry The_Dark, we kind of hijacked your thread here. If you contact Avid I'm sure they'll be interested in getting the demo to work for a potential customer, it's worth a shot.

It may be a case of where the demo/working version download link was twisted up, I've seen that happen before with some Flash stuff.

I had that happen to me when I was trying to download the demo for Cleaner. The link they sent me was for an outdated version that had already expired. Doesn't look like I'll be going with them.

I don't buy any piece of software without giving a test drive first.

I don't think there is any legal downloadable demo of Avid software. The only download they appear to offer is FreeDV (which is 100% freeware, no "trial" issues at all).

The Dark:

Can you post the link on here so we can figure out exactly what you downloaded? Avid Free DV will not do a dongle check but any other version will. I'm not trying to accuse you of anything but I, along with some others, are curious as to exactly what Avid software you are trying to run.

Hope we can help you.

I'll post the *link* for Dark:

Not that I disagree with doing it that way and trying it out....but for God's sake....don't come into a Pro forum and ask for help regarding your pirated software.

all i can say is that when it was being downloaded it was titled demo version,

to you Reservoir and anyone else that's dropping the hint that they think I'm try to pirate things under this forums nose, I'll tell you, all I'm looking for is a working demo of this product, thats all I'm after, so if anyone has a link to a demo that doesn't ask for a dongle , that would be greatly appreciated, if not, i guess I'll have to test the full version on someones computer that bought it already
