What surprised you most about your HMC150?

I love the camera. Ergonomics are great. Everything works just like you'd expect. Love the waveform; love the pre-record.

My peeve is the limited range of options for the 3 user buttons. I'd like to assign different quality rates--1->high quality 2-> lower quality. The dive into the menus isn't too bad but it'd be quicker with user buttons.

Mine was dropped on a rock from 5 feet and it still works just fine!!My DVX100 fell on soft grass from 4 feet and died. Maybe the moral of the story is I should stop dropping cameras!

I'm still annoyed at how much computing power is required to process AVCAM footage. I'm not sure who is to blame for this, however. Is it the editing software makers or the makers of the video standard?

Overall, however, I give the camera a score of 9.5/10. I love it.

The HMC looks soft when compared to other similarly priced HD cameras (Sony V1, Canon A1) because of the lower resolution of the chips. It really depends on what you are shooting. For landscapes, the softness is really noticeable in comparison. The plus side is much better low light capability.

I am in love with mine. I am in the PC biz. And use the fastest AMD cpu and have no problems editing. Its almost just like tape to me. I will try it on the i7 next..might be better. I also have a 64bit version of Vegas 9..And it really helps with the editing. It renders 40% faster then vs9 32bit. Using window7 64 OS.

Love this camera, I bought two last year and they work like horses :) The 2 things I hate are the low res badly calibrated LCDs and the sloooooowwww travel of the manual focus ring making hand-held focus pulls a bumpy affair - a firmware release could surely fix that!!

The HMC has less pixels on its sensor than the V1. The size of the sensor has nothing to do with the number of pixels on the sensor.

actually, the hmc is even softer than canons tiny consumer cameras. At 1080, It looks almost sd in comparison... still there is a quality about this cam that goes beyond resolution and sharpness.

What's this "softness" that some have spoken of? How does it compare to other cameras?

I have seen well lit scenes that where sharp and close ups that showed all the detail I'd ever want to see so I think the chip size and resolution is fine for most HD needs from a camera that cost less than $3500. But I have seem soft video too.

I think the weak spot may be the lens but that's just my thoughts on the matter.

As compared to Canon and Sony they can look sharper than the 150 but they also look more like video to me. Less natural if you will and Soap/News like.
I can live with the 150 for the film like look and more natural gammas that comes right out of the camera.
