what studio monitors do you use ?

Another +1 from me. I've used all kinds...Mackie (never translated well), Tannoy, Blue Sky, Adam, Event, KRK, Genelec, and others, and the JBL's just simply rock the house. These are the only active monitors that have actually blown me away. They are spendy, but well worth it.

Right on Dave! We're JBL bruthus...

I use Yamaha HS80's but I find they are too bright. Even with room calibration my mixes still sound too dull unless I EQ to the point of irritation. Do not underestimate the power of room calibration and if those JBLs have it built-in (and I have heard good stuff from others about JBL Pro monitors) that would be my choice.

On a budget though the Yamaha HS50 and subwoofer combo are great.

I use Harbeth Monitor 30 Actives in house and Klein + Hummel O110D for mobile location use.

Though I am considering, also, getting a pair of the new Neumann KH 120 units as they are the same size as my O110Ds, but go lower and are a tad better I hear (even though they are about a third cheaper).

The Opals sound great out at the Rode listening room at the plant here. Currently using Adam A7, in a treated room, I could mix all day on those but keep it to a couple of hours nowdays.

Sold the JBL 4311s I bought from Bruce Jackson for $400 just before he went off to join Presley, to a guy who wanted to do them up. I think he visits here.

Cheers.

I have Genelec 1029´s , Klein+Hummel OY, Urei 811B, KRK V8 and other cheap stuff. The room is most important! I use tube traps and panels to control my reflections and standing waves. The Urei are my favourite, they are almost passive and scream with a 20 W amp but I use them with a 700 W class A amp.
I like the small Genelecs for carrying around, self powered, full metal casing and good as nearfields.....

Also do u guys use a sub with these nearfield small speakers (~5inch woofer) ?

That depends on the speaker. I think with a 5" you would need a sup. My JBLs are 8" and very powerful, and I do not need a sub. Maybe if I was doing 5.i mices... But if you have 5" woofers with no sub, you will tend to overcompensate for the lack of bass in the speakers and turn the bass up in your mix - and that won't carry over to other systems well. All your mixes will sound too bassy if your speakers don't have enough bass.

Got my focal cms 50 today !!! Did a super brief demo vs the Alesis 620 and the bigger Alesis wasnt even close ! Let me know if any of you guys might want a review.

I love my Dynaudio BM5A's. Also cross reference mixes on a really old pair of JBL L100's. Still sound great ..roughly 35 years old..
