What strength ND filter would I need to shoot f3.2 on a sunny day?

Hey why not start with the good ole sunny-16 rule (iso100, f16, 1/100= gets proper expsosure on a bright sunny day).

changing the shutter to 1/50 would make you have a stop of f22, so if you want to shoot with a stop of f2.8 for example in the same conditions, lets count down stops:

f22 (base exposure no ND)
f16 (.3 ND)
f11 (.6ND)
f8 (.9ND)
f5.6 (1.2ND)
f4 (1.5ND)
f2.8 (1.8ND)

There you have it, on a bright sunny day shooting at 1/50th @ iso100 means you would need 6 stops of ND (1.8) infront of the lens to shoot at about f2.8.

You can verify this more accurately by using a lightmeter.

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude but why are you so hell bent at shooting at such a wide aperture at such extreme lighting conditions as a noon high sun? You have several posts within a day or so asking someone to solve your simple math question.

I agree on the multiple posts (if nothing else, gather your thoughts and post all the specifics and questions at the top of 1 post), but it's pretty darn easy to realize why he wants to shoot wide open in high light intensity at 1/50th shutter speed. I need to all the time.

Wide aperture = shallow DOF
1/50 shutter = film like shutter effect at 24p

Anyways, I usually use a 1.8 or 2.1 or a with my Minolta 28mm f2.8.

awwwww . with all this colourful banter flying around it almost felt like a IMDB thread ...i guess its good to have 12 yr olds participate here as well.

Wow, there's a lot of poor behavior going on in this thread. I've cleaned it up because there is actually some good info in it. We have no tolerance for personal attacks or users who can't conduct themselves like adults. Next time I see this kind of behavior I will boot people permanently.

If you have a problem contact a mod first, responding to stupidity with more stupidity is just well...stupid.

I bought 2 sets of ND filters, 2/4/8, etc and then just apply as needed to get good exposure at the stop I want to shoot at. Not really that hard and no math needed.

That's the FUN of shooting, the trial and error. At least for me.

I suggest to get a Vari ND or Fader ND or how they'r called. I got one and it is very useful.

I've already posted what I said 2 times before.

As far as the adjustable ND, do they have some kind of marking so you can recall your ND settings exactly?

I have a 52mm fader nd. It is a very convenient thing to have. For marking which ND setting your at, I used little cuts from different colored tapes. Normally 1 or two and i would be good for a certain situation.

Relax, I don't think the post was directed at you. I deleted a lot of insults and garbage posts that you can't see now.

No, sorry Svart the post was not directed at you or anyone in particular. Just a general observation after watching several post escalate lately.

Now, on to these variable ND filters. I used to hear terrible things about the quality but not so much anymore. Do these degrade the image, at all?
