What size xlr cable do I use?

Hi everybody,


What length of xlr cable do I use to connect a shotgun mic to the on board holder to the xlr port.


1 foot, 18", or something small.

The built-in mic holder is a poor solution because it's too close to the camera and makes the mic prone to pick up operating noise from the camera. If you use a decent shockmount attached to the camera accessory shoe, you'll need an 18" XLR cable.
 
I use the AT8415 with the accessory shoe adapter. I think it runs $50-$60. You can mount it on a boom pole or use the shoe mount.
