what other rail system that would work with the Extreme ?

Due to the offset, I have seen most people here are using the cavision with the Extreme. Is there any other rail system that would work ? I would like to have other alternatives for evaluation.

thank you all in advance

Does anyone knows whether the Zacuto Base plate with rods have enough vertical offset to be used with the Extreme?

44mm (the offset of the lenses using the Let Ex) is ~approx 1.75 inches. Keep in mind you would need some wiggle room if you are planning on using a rail mounted mattebox.

Id shoot Zacuto an email and find out how much their baseplate can move vertically.

I emailed Joel from Hyson Films and he said his plate moves 2.25" vertically.

Something else to consider is the distance the Letus mounting bracket needs from the rails to the bottom of the extreme.... ?

I'm going to be using the Letus Extreme with a 45mm rod system from Cinevate; I did a good amount of research before purchasing it. The primary reasons for going with the Cinevate rail system were:

1) Virtually unlimited vertical height adjustment for the camera mount (the 1 5/8" post holding the camera base plate can be any length).

2) The tripod plate is separate from the camera plate which means you have a lot of flexibility in balancing the weight of your rig front to rear.

3) The customer support I've received from Cinevate has been nothing short of spectacular.

Some features on some other systems I found that perhaps might be useful but weren't show-stoppers in my book were:

1) Horizontal adjustment of the camera plate
2) Ability to customize the overall length of the system with threaded add-on rods

Ultimately, I'll have a mattebox, follow focus, XLR adapter, external monitor and batteries along with the Extreme on the rails which I'll post pictures of after it's fully setup.

Hope this helps.

The Cinevate rails look the most promising for Extreme rigs that will need to go from sticks to shoulder mount quickly - the Cavision doesn't look like you can use rails that extend past the tripod head when it's mounted, unless I'm missing something.

Having worked with the Cinevate rails recently, I was impressed at how versitile each piece is and that there are a ton of different options when building up their rail systems. The seperate tripod plate makes all the difference in the world when trying to balance on a head.

Now not having paid attention to the height adjustment of the Cinevate rails, I'm wondering if the support rod to camera plate is just a 5/8" piece of aluminum easily purchased or does it come in custom lengths from Cinevate - Wonder if Dennis could post some more detailed photos of the rail system to show the height adjustment possibilities?

Kind of sucks to only have a few Extremes out there and not enough on all of the different mount options...

Chenopup,

The 5/8" support rod is standard and easily purchased at a hardware store; I'm sure you can use either aluminum or stainless steel as long as it is 5/8" in diameter. Dennis provided me with a 6" rod which can be cut to any length.

On the Cinevate forum, there are a bunch of pictures of various people's setups. Take a look at this one for an idea of how a long support rod works: http://cinevate.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1067

As you'll see, you can even mount the camera plate upside down thereby obviating the need for a flip unit in some cases!

Cheers,

Leo
