...What Now?

So my house was ransacked today, and my DVX was stolen... Now I need to figure out the best option... Luckily, my 7D wasn't taken, but, it doesn't satisfy my needs. I shoot events and concerts, and I need to be able to either record to my MacBook at times to record live, or use XLR mics...

I love the DVX, but I don't know if I can afford another one (keep in mind my $250 shotgun and firestore were also attached)... I have heard good things about the Sony PD170, but I am not sure if that is in my price range either... How bad is the Sony FX1 or FX7, because I can probably get one pretty cheap... I would much prefer to stick to Panasonic, but I might just have to get something else.

I really can't spend over $1100... I also need tapes now, so that's another $100 at least (but the sony cameras can handle the much cheaper sony tapes!!!!!)... I can deal without a shotgun for a while, since I have a handheld and a lav...

Thanks guys!

Well "Blondie." said that the Fx1 is similar n the hd on it isnt that noticeable when compared to a dvx. if anything id go with the fx (besides the fact its sony)
**sorry to hear about your situation

yeahh, i picked up mine with 104 hours, audio technica shotgun, bag, 2 bat. a on cam light with 2 bat. for 1300

so you can go both ways

Damn Andy, first a Customs dog p!sses on your first DVX, then the replacement gets stolen?
Are your DVXs cursed??? Sorry to hear it!

But yeah, there's DVXs out there for $1100, people are selling them to get DSLRs, so if a DVX is what you want, keep looking.
Good luck!

oh, sorry to hear about your stolen baby.
if you have your 7D, why not shoot with that? it might not be the best solution for you but C'mon, don't spend $1k for another camera. $1k is a lot of money so use it for something that's future prof too.
maybe you can get accessories for your 7D or something. (that way you can use xlr's too)

Aren't the stolen items covered by your parents' insurance policy? The items were in the home when taken and were not being used for commercial purposes.

**** man, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that, I don't know what I'd do if I lost mine.

I've never been a Sony fan. In my opinion, everything below the EX series isn't that great - I bet people have gotten some great images from the FX1/FX7, but in my mind they just can't compare to the image control of a Panasonic. I have a friend with an FX1, and I don't want to insult his skill in either video or post, but his footage (in HD) comes out pretty much the same (but with worse colors) as mine uprezzed from my DVX. Don't waste your time with the FX series.

If you're okay with tapes/SD, try and find another DVX. If I find an HVX/HPX soon and buy it, I may be looking to move mine - the LCD doesn't work, so it'd go cheap.

If you want to keep it simple, try the Canon HFS200 - it even does 24p! I recommend that to a lot of younger kids looking to get into filming, but if you're on a tight budget and just need something to tide you over, would that work? It doesn't have the XLR ports, but hey, I'm sure you could make something happen.

Good luck dude, hopefully something comes your way. +vibes

what's the going rate for used hmc150 cams these days? seems like coming from a dvx, you would feel right at home with it.

i myself am looking to buy a hmc150 - ebay you can find some 2k - 3.5k
so it all depends n in la surprisingly nobody is selling em on criagslist

The consumer canons might be my only option, but really, I am not a kid looking to get into filming... I think I am going to look into getting a used DVX...

If I'm not mistaken, MarlonLadd has a Canon HFS200. He ain't exactly a kid looking to get into filming, either. You could ask him how he likes it.

But if I was in your shoes, I'd save for an HMC150 and never look back.

I know, I know, its a *****, but those little Canons really are quite cool...just not as cool as the DVX. How long do you have before you need a camera?

Ive Got one Dvx100b with a quick stream 4.5hrs tapeless drive and a perol bag for 1200 dollars

Exactly what i was thinking - your going to have to move up to hd anyway right? n if you buy another dvx it wont be long before you going to have to sell it before the market goes down for em... im actually doing the same thing, saving a few hundred n then going to sell my dvx and get a hmc150
its honestly worth it in the long run
