What not to do w/ YOur DVX!

Im starting a list (AGAIN!!!) so we all can collaborate and list the many things that are bad for the DVX. Through your experiences of faults, pave the way for the rest of us and help the progression of the dvxusers from ever making those certain mistakes again. list a “ DO NOT ---“ or “NEVER—“, so the mistake will never be made again.

I’ll start with

DO NOT aim DVX in the sunlight—even with the UV protector on.
DO NOT plug in firewire when the DVX is on. Turn off First.
DO NOT wipe viewfinder lens with cloth- Only with a compressed air can( or so I hear)

Okay, go my little children

DO NOT aim the viewfinder at direct sunlight.
DO NOT expose your baby to extreme temperature differences.
DO NOT screw the tripod on too hard.

More will come :)

NO NO NO. Before anyone goes spraying their DVX lens with compressed air, stop, don't do it. NEVER use compressed air to clean the lens. I don't know who told you to do so, but don't. Very often, when using compressed air, little spits of the liquid inside will spray, thus effectively ruining the coating on the lens. If you need to blow dust off the lens, use a lens blower, usually look like a football with nipple. You can also use gentle optical tissue (use once, and throw away), with lens cleaning fluid for spots that do not want to come out. but never, ever use compressed (canned) air, you have been warned.

Actually, yes, I’ve experienced this when cleaning my keyboard !! Common sense, or common $dollar$, just hit me. thankx

why is a cloth bad for the lens? So you can't use lens cleaner? If you clean the UV filter with lens cleaner do you need to wait until it is completely dry before reattaching it to the lens?

hey, my wife is starting to look like a football with a nipple... anyway, that stuff in the cans is some kind of freon. Or at least it used to be. I remember using it a long time ago and if you didn't spray it just right, it would spray out frozen liquid with an oily base. Not exactly what you want on your lense. One other don't do... refrain from hacksawing your lense off for an experiment. I never heard the results from the guy who did that several months ago, but I gotta believe he had a few issues.

According to the manual you should NOT leave your battery attached to the camera when not in use for a period of time. The battery could be depleted permanently making it useless.

Also do not manual zoom with the zoom ring with the zoom switch set to "zoom" it could cause damage.

DO NOT leave tape un-rewound(sp?) tapes in the DVX, since this will stretch out the tape. Always rewind and take out.
DO NOT immerse your DVX in water----lol, yes!

In order to keep the 'hour meter' of ur camera down....DO NOT leave your tapes inside the camera, if you are not using them.... Beware...Whether you are recording or not...your HOUR meter is ON if there is a tape inside.

Do not leave your camera lens unprotected...Always keep the UV filter on.

I would not use a liquid lens cleaner on a coated lens or filter. It will remove the coating. Using compressed air: If you must, spray from the side not directly into the lens. It forces more dust into the lens and it does have liquid in it to some extent. Using a air-bulb with a brush on the end is the best. Also, do not use 80 min. tapes.

Wow, I didn't know that!

DO NOT Shoot a very important scene with the gain turned up, unless you dig that look!
DO NOT leave your camera unattended on a Tripod
DO NOT get drunk and throw up on your camera
DO NOT give your camera a bath

Even if the battery is not inserted? Wow.. This must be the reason why my hour meter has raised 20hrs in a few days :undecided

DO NOT try to screw your dvx onto your fluid head without removing the quick RELEASE plate!
DO NOT clean your lens when it is absolutely clean?! That is unless you are looking into an effect of smeared lens coating... (for people who like to do everything in-cam)
DO NOT leave batteries on cam since they still drain no matter if the cam is on or off...
I always do that last one but it is harmless... the drain is insignificant although present...

DO NOT ever record to tape once hvx is out, har har har!

My cam is showing 00008 on the hour meter, but I've only used up one tape. Kinda crazy they didn't adjust this. So a low hour meter is important for resale value I presume?

As for the liquid cleaner on a coated filter, thnx for the 411. I just wish I had heard that before for my Nikon DSLR. I even used them on my lenses (for the nikon). :(

Do not take to the beach unprotected!
Do go to the beach and shoot hotties!(and share the video here!)
Do not hang out the car without eye and lens protection.
Do not place near the Foreman while making grill cheese.

Off course NOT.... I meant if the tape is inside, and the camera is ON.... many believed their Camera Head Drum is not in use.....in fact it is all the time IN USE, whenever there is a tape inside... and therefore the hour meter of the camera is ticking.
